Can we change our ‘hate-India’ mindset?

I must confess that the title of Air-Vice Marshal Shahzad Chaudhry’s piece “Can we change our ‘hate-India’ mindset?” was deceptive as it was more about Bangladesh than India. It also raised expectations, that perhaps the retired air marshal had re-thought the basic framework which drives hatred for India in this country. Instead, I came across a rambling piece regarding the use of a Bangladesh model, which is very popular amongst the Pakistani pro-establishment circle, to bring about internal changes in the country.

The article inferred that development in the country, as in the case of Bangladesh, would help get rid of our anti-India policy. To say the least, this sounds like an absolutely incorrect reading of the past, present and even the future. Bangladesh and Pakistan are different — as one of the main political players in Dhaka, the Awami League, traditionally has good ties with India. This is mainly because part of the Bangladeshi military, the Mukti Bahini freedom fighters, is indebted to India. Ziaur Rehman’s BNP under the leadership of his wife Khalida Zia, on the other hand, had relatively better ties with Pakistan. This could also be due to the fact that Bangladesh’s General Zia was part of the repatriated officers who form a bulk of Bangladesh military’s officer corps.

In Bangladesh, the common man, especially those in the border areas, dislikes India more than Pakistanis due to border skirmishes between the two neighbours, and other issues including smuggling of cattle and water. The reason such popular opinion does not translate automatically into more conflict is because, unlike in Pakistan, Bangladeshi governments are not willing to use this negative opinion to their political advantage.

As for the Bangladeshi model of political change that Mr Chaudhry and others of his ilk so like, it was a top-down change envisioned by the country’s middle class. However, it did not manage to weed out the political actors it so wanted to. Nor has the Grameen Bank model brought real change in Bangladesh. In fact, it was later discovered that the bank was deceptive in reporting its financial performance. More recent research, some of which can be read in the autumn issue of the South Asian magazine Himal, shows that Yunus’s was a neo-liberal approach which increased indebtedness of the local community without increasing profits because too many people were doing the same thing through micro-credit loans. However, since the collateral was indirect, people tended to waste money rather than put it to good use.

Had Mr Chaudhry looked deeper, he might have discovered two broad reasons for why Bangladesh has performed better than Pakistan. Despite the high polarisation of the Bangladeshi state and society, they are largely committed to a secular identity. Although the majority of people are Muslims there have never been claims of the country being the fortress of Islam which can only be defended militarily. The separation of religion from politics provides a healthy space in which faith can grow and allow people to coexist.

To Bangladesh’s advantage, its military’s initial structure was not professional despite the fact that the bulk of its officers were those repatriated from Pakistan. This meant that the military continued to be less Machiavellian in the initial part of the country’s history. Although the army conducted two coups, it could also be pushed out because it had not managed to create a powerful national narrative that was based on inciting fear and gathered people around the armed forces.

The fact of the matter is that India-hatred is the raison d’être of Pakistan’s security apparatus. This, in isolation, is not wrong since all militaries are designed to respond to an external threat. The main problem is that like the Prussian army, our military has become larger than life and continues to paddle anti-Indianism as the nation’s driver. Under the circumstances, many like Shahzad Chaudhry may privately or publicly confess to anti-Indianism, posing a problem for economic growth, but fail to offer a solution. Settlement of outstanding disputes alone may not solve the problem — the solution of disputes itself is linked with a change in perception.

Fact of the matter is, when people are willing to blindly blame India for everything from floods to terror attacks to water shortage without presenting any kind of proof to anybody in the world, who will take such people seriously?

When Lankan team was attacked, India was blamed...what happened?

When GHQ was attacked, India was blamed.....what happened?

When police academy was attacked, India was blamed......what happened?

When blasts took place in Karachi and so many shops were burnt in arson, India was blamed...what happened?

When it flooded, India was blamed....what happened?

When there was shortage of water, India was blamed...what happened?

India is nothing but a bogeyman on which everything wrong in Pakistan gets blamed. That is the truth.

All happened by the blessing of Zardari and Sharif.... why blame India?

Let's shift our hate towards those two responsible for ruining Pakistan.

But the truth is that Zardari and Gilani are also nothing in front of the all powerful Pak Army...then ultimate blame of Pakistan's condition today must lie with PA. Don't you think so?

It all began with the '1000 year war' and 'bleeding Inida by 1000 cuts'.

Zia was nothing but an armyman.

The truth is, Pakistan's army is responsible for the sorry state of affairs in Pakistan today and since it is easy to blame India, hence India has to take all blame.

we dont hate india..it has nothing to do with India..but some of our india appeasing journalist will write anything to win a peace prize.

India is an amateur clown of Asia which constantly competes in a self-obsession of superiority by any means. This makes india a very annoying neighbor with constant politics of cheat, lie, deception, manipulation and cunning. The indian vision of a nation is the big brother of asia with smaller nations bowing down to its unquestioned superiority. Nobody would accept domination by such means. India wants to play a major role and does all the propaganda it can despite not being able to play any role. When the India political attitude can mature up to the level of rest countries it can be considered for bilateral ties as a serious neighbor.

The first line of your post and rest of it, are self-contradictory.

Nations born out of a persecution complex must remain ' charged up' to stay intact. This is done in S Asia by having a common enemy whom the knights in shining armour "keep at bay".

This persecution complex that formed the nation then permeates into its sub parts ( read states) who then in the absence of a common enemy begin to see enemies within in the form of one state / region / group of ppl forever skimming off the butter and leaving the rest to gain nourishment from.

Instead of a ' hate India ' mindset what needs to be changed is the sense of persecution both from without & within.

The presence of Indians on this forum is in itself proves that we had moved whereas Indians thronging our forum for spewing hate against Pakistan.

The taunt "Go to Pakistan" the Indian Muslims even hear today itself proves its India that is having Hate Pakistan issue.

Indians trying tooth and nail proving Two Nation theory on different levels itself shows that You are having Pakistan phobia and in denial about existence of Pakistan.

The Talk of We are one people by Indians when they themselves are not one having so many differences also show that you somehow want to negate existence of Pakistan.

The list is long

Quod Erat Demonstrandum

The hate India mindset stalls the progress of Pakistan. The hate Pakistan mindset stalls the progess of India.

You are concerned about what hurts India, but NOT what hurts Pakistan (which is the topic of the OP). Your obsession is evident.

Accept it, you guys also enjoy your daily dose of arguing with Indians or else there would not be so many Pakistanis/Indians here in the first place.

BTW, your signature itself proves how much you have 'moved on'!

you know what your signature indicates? That you have nothing to think about in life except 'India' as if India were the center of your universe!

Please keep your words of wisdom to yourself. I'm an indian muslim and I know 'kaun kitne paani mein hai'.

Indians do not have to prove that two nation theory was wrong.

Creation of Bangladesh in itself proved that two-nation theory was wrong.

Everyday there are bomb blasts in Pakistan with muslims killing mulsims.

Everyday muslims are being killed in karachi.

Those who went to Pakistan from India are still discriminated against as 'Mohajirs'.

Then what 'two-nation theory' are you talking about?

The Talk of We are one people by Indians when they themselves are not one having so many differences also show that you somehow want to negate existence of Pakistan.

We fight amongst ourselves..yes! But when push comes to the shove..we are all one!

I can tell you that.

The list is long

Bring it on!:sniper:

No what you stated is all false.... all happened with Indian army sending terrorists to Pakistan and installing a puppet regime for keeping the lid on heinous crimes of RAW.

It is only 3 years ago when Pakistan was prospering and peaceful.
If their is no RAW their is no terrorism in the region and with Indian migrating to west it is adding threat to Muslims abroad as well.

Truth is doctors have taken organs out of the bodies of injured and living Pashtuns for commercial and experimental reasons.
Not to mention RAW sending planes full of Afghan children back to India for medical experiments and later use them as suicide bombers.

The reason why we are discussing this is post #1 , an article written , reproduced & commented by Pakistanis. Evidently, it is a Pakistani who is suggesting that the hate India mindset ( in Pak) must change.

Ppl on this forum do not represent an iota of Pak populace.Neither do the Indian here reflect the Indian thought process in any significant %. There fore the fact that Indians are allowed here does not indicate any tectonic shift in mind sets or approaches. Deep in our hearts we are not much different than what we were a few decades ago.

No one wants to negate the Pak existence. What one wishes is that Pak should stop lamenting over the past / spilt milk, be stable, self reliant & in control of its self & what lies within its geographical boundaries - something that has happened since 47 in fits & starts only.
