The North Korea soldiers are indoctrinated that the US and South Korea are ultimate evils. In case of war, they'll storm southward in waves of human waves. The South has been living in nightmares thinking about this scenario. Also China will not standby if US comes in.

Because of these 2 factors, it is unlikely the US has the political will to fight another major war in the peninsular after 60 years of detente.

One of the calculations you have to make is how crazy/desperate/unpredictable your enemy is. In the case of NK, nobody really knows how they will react, so you kind of have to go by the worst-case scenario.

Hardly a question, of course the US can beat down North Korea like the dog it is, South Korea might get mauled though.

Should South Korea and the US attack first and with overwhelming force, they might be able to mitigate the damage done to Seoul by wiping out a significant amount of artillery.

South Korean and American artillery, bombs, etc are very accurate after all.

Why do people ask "Can the U.S taken on NK?" ?

If there is conflict with NK, it won't be with just the U.S it will be with the majority of the world. Just like the war in afghanistan and iraq. It's a coalition of countries who take action.

it is so stupid to conduct joint military drills so regularly in the region.
It is very likely NK will launch its satellite regardless. The only option to avoid the tension being escalated to a war is China needs to send a team of experts to help ensure that the path of the launch will stay away from Japan and SK's anti-missile range.

I suppose if we look at American successes in Afghanistan one would have to say that NK have nukes so Americans may not have the same success they have had in Afghanistan in NK

If Afghanistan had the same war machine as North Korea has the US would have never invaded it in the first place, It would have been too costly in the eyes of Washington.

In The case of war with north Korea, it is mostly the Koreans -north and south- who will suffer the worst consequences, while a few - in comparison - American losses will be incurred, while the rest are sitting comfortably at their homes in the US.
Both both Koreas will be fools to let such thing happen to them, they are now talking about reuniting in the future.
And anyhow in my own opinion, based on the facts, the US and and its allies cannot tackle North Korea at all, the losses will be too high and the US+ will be defeated, this without talking of the proximity of China which will not let it happen in the first place.
