It is one specific rifle design with about 500 different vvariants. AR15 was based on the AR10 designed by Eugene Stoner for the Armalite, Fairchild had interests in the armalite company and after struggling to find commercial success fairchild then sold the design to Colt. AR15 specifically refers to Armalite Rifle Design 15.

AR15 later became the Colt M16, and yes it is one specific gun design, but has been adopted by multiple other gun manufacturers, like the HK 416/417 and the MPT 72 are all AR15/AR 10 derivatives. AR15 from get go has been a modular system which can be adopted to multiple calibers like the 5.56 Nato, 6.8 spc, 300aac black out, .458 soccom and .50 Be
owolf.

M4/M16 series, C7 Series, CAR series rifles, just among them selves account for close to 70 different major variants.

The AR-15 comes in many sizes and has many options, depending on the manufacturer. The part shown bottom center is the lower receiver with pistol grip and trigger assembly. The term "AR-15" signifies "Armalite rifle, design 15". The trademark "AR15" or "AR-15" is registered to Colt, which requires the term to be used only to refer to their products. The AR-15 is based on the 7.63 mm AR-10. The AR-15 lower receiver can be used as a trigger mechanism for single shot or side-fed upper receivers for a variety of larger calibers, including .50 BMG.

Unusually sensitive or improperly seated primers may cause a slamfire during loading. Hammer follow malfunction is another potential problem for AR type rifles.
