Speakers at a discussion on Friday called upon the people of all strata to stand against the present government to save the nation from Indian hegemony.
Diploma Engineers' Association of Bangladesh (DEAB) arranged the discussion on "Failed Government in Protecting Due Water of the Inter-linked Rivers and Division of Dhaka City" at the National Press Club in the city.
BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas was the chief guest at the function, which was addressed, among others, by Krishak Dal President Shamsuzzaman Dudu and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia's Adviser MajGen (retd) Ruhul Alam Chowdhury.
Engineer Md Hanif, convenor of the DEAB presented thekey-note paper.
Mirza Abbas said India helped Bangladesh during the Liberation War in 1971 for its (India) own interest, not for the interest of Bangladesh. Most of the ruling Awami League leaders didn't take part in the war rather they heard tales of the nine-month bloody war after returning from India, where they stayed during the war, he continued.
That's why they (AL leaders) were not devoted to the country's interest, he observed.
He also questioned the number of '30 lakh' of martyrs in the war. Actually, the number would be around '3 lakh', he said, adding that the number was widely circulated as Sheikh Mujibur Rahman once uttered it (number)when he came back home after the war.
Mentioning a news item that quoted an Indian security experts having said that Indian purposes of assisting Bangladesh in the 1971 war would be fulfilled if Sheikh Hasina's government again came to power ,Shamsuzzaman Dudu strongly criticized silence of the government over the remarks.
Some of the speakers found conspiracy in the division of Dhaka as against the sovereignty and independence of the country.
After weakening the BDR and the Army, the conspirators divided the capital city Dhaka into two parts with a bad intention to divide the nation's aspiration and thoughts, they alleged.
They said when Pashchim Banga government sometimes ignored Indian central government decision, the incumbent AL-led government accepted and imposed all ideas and words of Delhi on the citizens of Bangladesh.
They further said they were actually not against the neighbor India rather its aggressive attitude that went against Bangladesh.
