Businesswoman of the Year 2010
Economic Times announced its Corporate Excellence Awards and Zia Mody bagged the award for Businesswoman of the Year 2010. Boy, has she earned it! In the male-dominated field of corporate law, she's risen from the ranks to become one of India's leading corporate lawyers.
While you've probably heard of dozens of women lawyers, you can probably count those who've risen to the top on one hand. That's why we take our hats off to this woman who's broken the glass ceiling and how!
On winning the award, Zia said that she'd be happy if the recognition serves as "an inspiration to someone and demonstrates that there is less of a glass ceiling and that you can follow your dreams".
Now if you're about to point out that, her dad being a prominent jurist, she had it all laid out on a platter, you should know this: This lawyer has clients from all over the world coming to her so Zia isn't just known for being Soli Sorabjee's daughter. Of course, she does admit her lineage gave her an edge in the initial years.
But this 54-year-old astute businesswoman isn't just happy being the co-founder of AZB & Partners, a top law firm. As an active member of the Baha'i faith, she supports Baha'i-sponsored NGOs involved in education and empowerment of rural women. And that's not all. She's a SEBI member, a trustee of schools and NGOs alike and she's on the board of international organisations and banks too! No wonder then that she's a regular on India and Asia's lists of most powerful people!
