A publication has claimed that Ashoka’s conversion to Buddhism and his promotion of ahimsa opened India’s borders to foreign invaders.

It has also accused followers of Buddhism under Ashoka of having played a seditious role by assisting Greek invaders thinking they would destroy “Vedic religion” and pave the way for dominance of Buddhism.

This is so true. We are till date paying for that mistake.

We had no issues with Buddhism, Jainism or Sikhism. But they will never be allowed to be the religion of majority of India. We will never repeat the mistake.

What is your opinion about this? @Joe Shearer @Laozi

Let me ask you the question back: what do YOU as a rational human being and as one aware of the ways of different societies observing different systems of faith, and participating in war and peace side by side with that, think of it?

The contributor of this gem is clearly an ill-educated fanboy and a bhakt. Disregard his pathetic comment and tell us what YOU think.

This is something the even the Tibetans claim.

India's borders being opened to invasions, is due two reasons:
1. Breakup of large Indian empires
2. Lack of long term efforts to go offensive against invaders.

However conversion to Buddhism make one less bellicose is nonsense as several Mongol conquerors were Buddhist too.

Sir I seeked your opinion for a few reasons, first I don't have deep knowledge of the history. Secondly, if I say something that perhaps may not be neutral or will be considered and labelled anti-India etc..
My personal thinking is that it is totally illogical since China, Myanmar and Nepal also have sizeable populations of Budhists and I don't think any of these countries is comprising on its defence.

Hindusim with its cast discrimination would have become intolerable for lower masses and it is always the lower masses which reproduced rapidly giving them numerous superiority over minority upper castes..the same factors aided and abetted the islamic conquest of India..

Well said. And very well thought through; it isn't the length of a post that shows quality, it is the content of the post. There you have it.

1. Breakup of large Indian empires
2. Rarely attempted to go on the offensive against invaders.

LMAO for point 2., it's not because you don't attempted, simply you're not capable...to funny losers are trying to turn argument into their favor with load of excuse.

True that Ashoka did a lot to propagate Buddhism, but he never changed his tactics.
He actually did cultural invasion

I don't think so with Sikhism. And Jainism never ruled or been in majority. But yes, if India was to remain Buddhist after Ashoka's time then India would be a Muslim or Christian nation today just like the Central Asian countries/Afghanistan/Pakistan. It is quite evident that Pakistan hates India not because of the shared history or any tumultuous relations with Hindus, but because the Hindus/Sikhs stopped the spread of Islam within Punjab and Sindh. If it wasn't for this all of India, South East Asia and even China would have been Muslim, which is Pakistanis talk about that Ghazwa s**t whatever that is.

Tell me what do you think Buddhist majority regions like Afghanistan, Central Asia, East Turkestan and most of Pakistan not only succumbed to the Muslim invasion but easily converted in whole scale to Islam but India in spite of over 650 years of Islamic rule did not?

Because they, the first three, were decayed and dying civilisations. You also need to know why what is today Pakistan adopted Islam, and the history of Islam in those parts, Multan and Sindh on the one side, and the Punjab on the other. Please read your history before coming out with glib and superficial analyses.

Irony that a Chinese mentions that given Chinese excuse for poor performance against its invaders has been that China was always an inward looking peaceful civilization.

Guess that makes China a civilization of "funny losers are trying to turn argument into their favor with load of excuse"

Read about Chola empire, How Indians conquered most of the parts of South East Asia.

Also India conquered China through cultural invasion!

Why should we invade? The world has always come to us.

China always gets whacked by outsiders and you need a revolution to get Chinese masses to get along.

Mongols, Muslims, Japanese.

They are several attempt of Indian empire going on the offensive, however none of them were long term efforts.

For example: Maurayan takeover Afghanistan and parts of Iran and Central Asia, while expelling the Greeks

No effort was made to expand further.
