NEW DELHI: With rising number of infiltration and ceasefire violation from Pakistan, the Border Security Force (BSF) has identified more than 76 'choke points' where a second rung of defence has been created to thwart any infiltration bid. The assessment was carried out soon after the July Gurdaspur attack in Punjab.

BSF DG DK Pathak on Friday said as many as 62 infiltration bid was foiled on the international border this year. According to BSF, the number of infiltration last year stood at 48. The border guarding force which is observing its 50th year is deployed along the 2286 kilometres of India- Pakistan border.

The second line of defence, according to BSF has been strengthened in Jammu and Punjab sectors. These include surprise deployments of forces, communication equipment and modern weaponry. This layer also has personnel drawn from the state police providing back up to the BSF. "We keep changing their locations depending upon the intelligence and movement of terrorists," explained a senior BSF official.

According to Pathak, BSF has also conducted vulnerability mapping of vulnerable patches on the Indo-Pak border. The border guarding force has also been provided with nigh vision devices to enhance the surveillance capabilities at cutting edge level. Pathak also lauded BSF saying that his force has managed to give a befitting reply to ceasefire violations by Pakistan.

He however said that the channel of communication between the director's generals of BSF and Pakistan rangers has been established after the latter's visit to New Delhi in September this year. "There have been incidents of cross border firing even after the talks but it didn't continue for long as it used to happen before. As long as the channel of communication is open, we are in a position to discuss each other's doubts and concerns," Pathak said.

On the Indo-Bangla border, Pathak said as many as 4,000 people have been apprehended for trying to come to India from Bangladesh. About 3,200 were held last year. However, there has been 70 per cent decline in cattle smuggling.
