Dogs eaten in countries like China are often family pets, a charity says

British holidaymakers could boycott countries such as China or Vietnam - to protest against the trade in dog meat, according to a Birmingham MP.

Steve McCabe (Lab Birmingham Selly Oak) said Far East countries where dogs are eaten were putting their tourist trade at risk.

He was speaking after a House of Commons debate where MPs heard 20 million dogs are eaten in China each year.

Five million are eaten in Vietnam and two million in South Korea.

MPs who spoke in the debate said they weren’t simply opposed to eating dogs, even though they did find the idea revolting.

They explained that dogs which are sold to be eaten are often family pets which have simply been stolen.

And there’s a belief, which has no scientific basis, that dog meat tastes better if the animal has high levels of adrenalin when it is killed.

It means the animals are sometimes deliberately mistreated, tortured and killed in the most painful way possible, on the grounds that this will make the meat tender.

The World Health Organisation has warned that consumption of dog meat, and the way the animals are transported while alive, is linked to outbreaks of cholera and the spread of rabies. And animal rights charity AnimalAsia has produced a report based on four years of research which highlights the fact that people are eating family pets, even if they believe the dogs have been farmed.

The report said: “Our investigations strongly point to what everybody familiar with the industry has long suspected - that the vast majority of China’s dog meat comes from stolen companion animals and that misinformation and illegality is rife at every stage of the . . . supply chain.”

Mr McCabe told the House of Commons: “It is probably not appropriate to think we can tell other countries what to do, but is it not reasonable to tell them what the reaction of the British public will be if the sorts of things they are doing become public knowledge?”

And referring to the Commons debate on Twitter, he said: “Horrific! Anyone hearing this wouldn’t holiday in these East Asian countries”.

Not Just for Christmas: Swiss Urged to Stop Eating Cats and Dogs

Swiss Urged to Stop Eating Cats and Dogs

Hundreds of thousands of people in Switzerland eat cat and dog meat, particularly at Christmas, according to a Swiss animal rights group seeking to ban the practice.

SOS Chats Noiragigue is behind a campaign to ban the consumption of cats and dogs, more commonly associated with countries such as China and Vietnam, in the small European country. A petition to parliament has gathered almost 18,000 signatures so far, including actress and animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot.

3% of Swiss people eat cat or dog meat, 80% of them being farmers. The Lucerne, Appenzell, Jura and Bern areas are the main culprits.

Please add the countries which eat pig in the list too.

6 Countries That Consume the Most Horse Meat
Published on May 22, 2015 at 10:59 am by GEORGE DURANKIEV in Lists
10 countries that eat the most meat so now we’ll take things further by diving into how and why horse meat is not a regular thing to see on tables.

There is no particular reason why people should not consume horse meat. In fact, this type of meat has been consumed since the dawn of time. What is more, the meat of horses is just as nutritional as any other and in certain ways – better than others. However, due to horses having been mainly companion animals to humans and considering their scarcity and high price in the past, you could see why eating horse would not be beneficial from that standpoint. On the other hand, horse meat was often consumed during pagan rituals which the catholic Church quickly condemned and this stuck through the ages. For other cultures around the world, eating this type of meat is seen as something people in the lower ranks of society do so it was frowned upon too. From then on, for one reason or another, the world developed around not eating horses. Their selective breeding was never focused on producing favorable qualities of their meet and, in modern times, their medicine and supplements were never meant to leave meat suitable for human consumption.

Even so, there are places around the world, where consuming horse meat is something ordinary and not frowned upon. While it does meet a lot of criticism from animal rights groups, the consumption of meat from horses is by no way harmful to the consumers or the ecosystem (on its current scale). From making it into sausages, packages of sliced meat or even being a national dish, let’s take a look at what horse meat (including donkeys) means to these special countries and their cuisine.

6. Canada
Canada’s French origins have passed on the consumption of horse meat to certain regions of the country. It is completely legal there and widely available in Quebec and Toronto.

British or the humane Europeans could take better care of the refugees instead of concerning with the fate of foreign dogs. Ain't human life more valuble than dogs?
Dogs don't try to stab you and hijack your lorry.

Here in the Philippines, some people is still consuming dog meat as an accompaniment to alcoholic drinks.
