Britain could buy weapons from its former Cold War foe for the first time under a landmark defence treaty, the Telegraph can reveal.

Defence chiefs are preparing to sign a deal that would see British defence companies working jointly on projects with the Russian arms industry.

The treaty allows arms companies to buy kit from Russia – and Russian diplomatic sources said they hope one day to see British soldiers carrying the Red Army’s famous Kalashnikov rifle as a result.

Ministry of Defence sources confirmed the deal creates the legal framework for the British Army to buy Russian equipment, but stressed their main focus is on allowing firms to share information and buy components from one another.

The MoD and the Russian Federal Service for Military Technical Co-operation are now studying the draft text. It could be signed in the spring, Moscow sources said, earlier than previously thought after making quick progress.

That's an amazing development. Maybe in my lifetime we'd see US-Russia buying considerable quantities of weapons from each other.

I dont want to be anti american or to recall Soviet times of hegemony or domination(alot of Eastern Europeans has very bad time under their communist leaders a.k.a puppets of Moscow),but more and more countries from East to West,from South to North see that world will never be unipolar again.And that Bear is not hibernating like in '90.

It was possible in '91 under US umbrella,today nationalism is back in foreign policies in 90 % countries.Just look at Japan.
Pacifism,liberty and then mr.Abe visit temple of Japanese warriors during Imperial Japan hegemony over East Asia.

Nothing really new here.
Despite disagreements on international issues there is more cooperation defense and space industry then ever between Russia and the "nominal" west (Mistral LPD, Iveco LMT, ESA's adoption of Proton as a medium weight launcher, that hypersonic vehicle research programme (MBDA LEA)..... are just some of the top of my head......)

The deal covers ‘unclassified’ technology, so it is unlikely to allow co-operation on advanced battlefield equipment such as missile systems.

News are good at first glance. However, the devil is in the details, as allways. Let's wait more detailed publications on agreements and then give any estimates. Justification of some my doubts I'd like to introduce you in another forum thread. BTW, the British company BAE Systems is the world's largest arms manufacturer. And both Russia and Britain are the largest arms sellers after the US.

British knows that Russian weapons are on the par with Western,but much cheaper,and that only US and Russia makes great technology weaponary,others are far away behind them.

British want to take a chance and coorporate with them.They are wise people.
