Negotiations are in place, cease fire against certain groups of rebels are in place, and Assad went from being on the defensive to being on the offensive. Obviously, Assad's allies would no scale down their overt support as things have turned around suffienctly.

LOL. You really think that America wanted to remove Assad? If they wanted to do so they could do it in months.

America did not allow weapon supplies to rebels in 2012, when Assad army fled from all over leaving boots.

In 2013 after Hezbollah and Iraqis came in America allowed very limited supplies.

After rebel advances in Dara in 2014 America ordered Jordan to stop supplies as result rebel did not advance in 2015.

Every month of Assad rule costs Russia and Iran billion dollars. Thats why America keeps Assad. They still can remove the Giraffe anytime they want.

I hope we can finally drop the, "Russia is in Syria to destroy ISIS" nonsense that the Putinbots kept peddling for months. It was always about propping up the dictator Assad. Putin lied about Syria, just like he did with the "little green men" in Crimea, and Russia's invasion of eastern Ukraine. This is a surprise to those who thought Putin would be there forever to protect the Asad regime. May failed to understand that Putin was never there to create a prosperous Syria or combat IS. He was there for one single purpose and that is to keep Assad, his puppet in power at all costs so that his influence in the strategic middle east does not deter. Before Russia came the rebels were coming left right and center and it seemed only a matter of time that Assad would fall. The world was screaming that Assad must go and there can be no solution with Assad in it however then Russia came and the game changed completely.

Assad's forces were able to strike back and hold positions and were able to reclaim strategic territories. The matter changed so much that us even said that there can be a solution with Assad in it and toppling Assad is not the lone option. Now they got to keep their bases in the strategic Syrian position from which they can keep an eye on things and their ally Iran as well while also playing advisory role to help Assad's Army fight the rebels. After Russian stalemate the peace process began which was a no option before Russian intervention.

With its economy it was obvious it was going to be a small game and unlike his soviet predecessors Putin called it in.

Did Russia defeat IS? Nope that was just a propoganda to hide the simple object of keeping its influence in the region.

Let's see how things happen in the future.. It will be very interesting indeed.

Russia wants to see immigrant crisis in Western Europe after Russia being pushed economically by US and EU, due to Russia taking over Crimea and in Eastern Ukraine. If there is no US and EU economic punishment to Russia, there will be no Russia intervention in Syria.

In other words Russia want to say, "Dont mess with us"

MOSCOW, March 14 (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday ordered his military to start the withdrawal of the main part of Russia's forces from Syria, saying that the Russian military intervention had largely achieved its objectives.

Putin, at a meeting in the Kremlin with his defence and foreign ministers, said the pullout should start from Tuesday. He also ordered that Russia intensify its role in the peace process to end the conflict in Syria.
