Brazilian Navy recently signed two contracts for the acquisition of JLTV light armored vehicles and Unimog 5000 trucks for the Marine Corps (Corpo de Fuzileiros Navais – CFN). The two platforms “represent a considerable increase in the combat power of the CFN“, the Navy press office said on December 2.

On November 24, Brazil formally purchased 90 Unimog 5000 trucks from the German company Daimler Truck AG. These military vehicles are suitable for operations on any terrain and especially for amphibious operations carried out by Marine Corps CFN troops. Batches of Unimog 5000 in different variant, including troops and material transport, or water and fuel tanks, will be delivered from 2021 to 2027.

The Unimog announcement follows the contract recently signed between the Brazilian Navy and the United States government for 12 Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTV), with deliveries by Oshkosh Defense expected from 2022.

The level of protection of the vehicle, combined with its mobility and firepower will enable the CFN Operative Groups to better conduct amphibious, law enforcement, peacekeeping and other military operations.

Both contracts also provide for the establishment of maintenance structures, with spare parts, equipment, tools and necessary training and formations. The acquisition of these new vehicles takes place within the scope of PROADSUMUS, the a Marine Corps subprogram that is part of the Navy strategic program “Construction of the Naval Power Core”.

PROADSUMUS subprogram was launched to consolidate and expand the CFN operational capabilities. “Acquiring these state-of-the-art assets, on the edge of military technology, ensures a high degree of versatility and flexibility for the CFN, expanding its operational readiness and its ability to project power in areas of national strategic interest,” the Brazilian Navy added.
