Brazilian Navy's Ships Project Centre (CPN) has been contracted to design a 500-tonne class patrol ship through an award placed in April.

Brazil's state-owned naval project management company (Empresa Gerencial de Projetos Navais: EMGEPRON), issued the contract for a vessel designated NPa 500-BR (Navio Patrulha 500 toneladas Brasil) that is to be developed over an 11-month timeframe.

The current plan is to build 20 ships, EMGEPRON told IHS Jane's . However, a potential contract is dependent on the navy's budget and ability to place the work with local shipbuilders. The design will also be available for export.

The basic configuration shows the ship based on the Macaé-class design - a Brazilian variant of the French Constructions Mécaniques de Normandie's (CMN's) Vigilante 400 CL54 - of which two units were built by Indústria Naval do Ceará (INACE) for the Brazilian Navy and another five are being built by Estaleiro Ilha (EISA) with first delivery now scheduled for December 2015.

Adding to the above article:

"The new ship, however, is to feature an enhanced propulsion suite and other modifications.
NPa 500-BR is intended to conduct various missions in Brazil's Exclusive Economic Zone, including surveillance, navigation and pollution control, search and rescue, and more. It could have a 450-tonne full displacement, 55.6 m long, 9.3 m beam, 25 kt maximum speed, 2,500 n miles range, and 15 days of autonomy.

The vessel is to be powered by a combined diesel and diesel propulsion (CODAD) system featuring two diesel engines, and it is to accommodate surface and search and navigation radars, a tactical control system, electro-optical fire control unit, and electronic warfare equipment.

Armaments consist of a 40 mm gun system, two manually operated 20 mm gun systems, or two remotely controlled weapon stations such as an Ares CORCED armed with .50-calibre machine gun."
