KARACHI: Provincial health authorities on Wednesday confirmed the first case of Naegleria fowleri, also known as ‘brain-eating amoeba’, of the current year and the subsequent death caused by it in the city.

The officials said a girl in her teens was the latest victim of the brain-eating amoeba, the primary cause of amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) in its victims.

The 18-year-old was admitted in a ‘critical’ condition to a private hospital last week and was put on the ventilator of an intensive care unit, where she died on Monday. The authorities confirmed the death on Wednesday.

The victim lived in an affluent neighbourhood of Gulistan-i-Jauhar, said the officials.

“The resident of Gulistan-i-Jauhar was identified as Areeba, who died of Naegleria after enduring the deadly disease for a day in a private hospital,” said a senior official while speaking to Dawn.

The officials said the deadly disease killed 14 people last year.

These are actually present in many fresh water bodies, like lakes, esp water that is not chlorinated and are quite common all over the world....good news is most people are not affected by it, but there are some rare unfortunate people who fall to it.

yups.... its known as Naegleria fowleria.... itd 100percent fatal....person dies within 2days... another organism of same group Acanthemoeba(castella culbertsoni) will cause same fatality in weeks..

Incubation period is 15 days.The average time to death is 5.3 days from the onset of symptoms..and only a handful of patients worldwide have actually survived of this brain eating amoeba infection.

P.S. you dont have to drink it to get infected from this infection. It finds its way through the nose when you actually swim or wash your face with contaminated water.

dude its most likely to happen to people who take bath in ponds....organism directly enter nose...
