BrahMos-M ( M for Mini ) will not be limited to “air-to-surface” roles for Air Force only said managing co-director of BrahMos Aerospace Alexander Maksichev to Russian media . Maksichev said that BrahMos- M could be adopted to develop “surface-to-surface” variant for ships and Army, as well as a “submarine-to-surface” for launch from submarines regular torpedo launchers can be created .
full-scale mockup of a new BrahMos-M missile was first displayed at DEFEXPO-2014 Land, Naval & Internal Homeland Security Systems Exhibition in India, earlier this year . Dr. Sivathanu Pillai, CEO and MD of the BrahMos Aerospace Company at that time had said that work on a detail design and an initial configuration of the rocket was completed.
BrahMos-M is claimed to be only 1.5 tons in weight, half of 3 tons weight of original BrahMos Ship variant and its length will be 6 m, diameter 50 cm, down from length of 10 m and a diameter of 70 cm of current BrahMos missile . Maksichev said Advancement of technology will allow BrahMos-M to cover same range of 290 km with 300 kg warhead at same supersonic speed of Mach 3 .
Maksichev said that BrahMos-M under design and development for deployment on fighter aircraft and should be ready in the next 2-3 years. According to Dr Pillai Su-30MKI will be able to carry three rockets and it will be possible to put two BrahMos-M rockets on a carrier-based MiG-29k and upgraded Airforce Mig-29SMT and later can be adapted into French Rafale and FGFA a 5th generation fighter aircraft under development .
Maksichev also said that Provision to carry Submarine launched BrahMos M can be made in new submarines to be procured for Indian Navy under 75I program ,if tender is offered to Russian Submarine developers.
Russo-Indian joint-venture enterprise BrahMos was established in 1998 and PJ-10 aka BrahMos was first test fired in 2001 , Missile was based on Soviet era supersonic cruise missiles based on the Russian-designed NPO Mashinostroyenie 3M55 Yakhont (SS-N-26).
