KARACHI: Sherdil starts off with Haris Mustafa (Mikaal Zulfikar) going against his father’s wishes to join Pakistan Air Force (PAF). We are made to believe that he’s born to fly and fight for his country. But for the next one hour, nothing happens. We only see him goofing around with his friends and later falling in love with Sabrina (Armeena Rana Khan). No conflict is established, no characters are established and the focus remains on pointless comedy.

Cut to five years later, Haris graduates though we still know nothing about him. His nationalistic spirit is mentioned in passing only once. Mikaal is acting. Armeena is acting (or reading lines off a teleprompter). Their performances come off as too plastic and it’s hard to connect with them. And whatever interest Indian flight lieutenant Arun Veerani’s (Hassan Niazi) brings in soon weans off. You simply don’t find yourself rooting for the lead couple to be together or praying for Haris to come back alive from his mission.

Sherdil means to instill you with a sense of pride and patriotism but ends up making you feeling nothing. Writer-producer Nomaan Khan, in his script, essentially has nothing to say. The problem is that he says it with confidence.

Visually, the flight sequences look relatively impressive than the rest of Sherdil but they do little to engage or thrill the audience. The rest of the film offers of lazy scene transitions, unsynchronised subtitles and mediocre music and goes on for nearly two-and-a-half hours.

Azfar Jafri’s input as a director doesn’t help either. After a point, the film becomes too hard to follow, just like a rookie pilot’s flight, ducking and diving with no sense of direction or control. It eventually plummets down a mountainside.

Since its invention, film has been used to propagate jingoistic ideologies. The difference here is that Sherdil is a hodgepodge romance drama disguised as an air force film. It feels unsure of what it wants to be. The form is inconsistent, the content insignificant and thus, the amalgamation of the visual and narrative elements sinks.

One more particular detail that is quite troublesome is the extreme malice in Haris’ tone when he mentions India, which I felt made the character seem more repulsive than heroic. But then again, such things are always a surefire way to denote patriotism in films from both sides of the border. Sherdil simply lacks emotion from beginning to end. You might walk in to the cinema hall excited but you’ll walk out indifferent.

Verdict: Sherdil isn’t exactly our top choice for entertainment.

In reality pak soldiers maintains a high moral ground and out play the enemy to defend the mother land.

in lolly wood a bunch of sarak chap tharkis make it to the forces and eventually end up rescuing and making up with a bachi in a tactical move.

What's up with this projection of strategic bachi narrative? :what:

God dammit grump what's your sole purpose in the army? :undecided: @Tps43 @Khafee

.
I was expecting. The level of sincerity can be judged from a single frame where Hero is smiling while performing for Passing out parade and receiving sword of honor. Pathetic.

.
Who cares if this movie gets any box office boom ! Our Airforce have already proved to the world what they are capable of and what they can do in future.
Just feel the sense of calmness they have brought to our nation, although we are still in a state of war with india.
Welldone Pak Fauj :tup::tup::tup:

. .
our film industry has many drawbacks, big gaps with nothing to watch is very common these days in Pakistani movies. simply because of lack of a good script. useless comedy with no grip is an added drawback to the movies. we need to revive the film industry on strong footings. otherwise we will see another downfall soon again, people are getting fedup with typical style of movies with not enough material to watch and see. besides script writing, we need good directors, face the reality and bring back the directors who made great films once, although we experienced really cheap masala in past same directors can bring very good results if they work with no cheap tactics. new comers directors, writer etc. with no film background are good for nothing. only financing can't bring results.

.
Is this the same lead actor (Mikaal) who gladly took a role in a Bollywood film as a Pakistani agent helping RAW capture/kill ISI-backed Kashmiri insurgent leaders?

And then the PAF allowed access to its bases etc to this low life?

SHERDIL TAKES BUMPER START IN RWP/ISL
We previously updated you on SherDil’s performance in Centaurus Cinemas in Islamabad and Universal Cinemas in Lahore. SherDil has taken bumper start in the twin cities of Pakistan. Film opened to packed houses in Centaurus Islamabad and its coming shows are already close to being packed too.

The film is now doing extremely well in Cinepax too with Cinepax WTC opening with well over 50% occupancy and this occupancy is further going to go up in the evening and night shows.

Cinepax Jinnah park has opened strong too and it looks like Rawalpindi/Islamabad will wrap up the first day with very healthy numbers. Right now the biggest day one of 2019 in Rwp/Isl is with Gully Boy at over 12lacs approx and SherDil will be chasing that number.

Last year Parwaaz Hai Junoon outperformed in Rwp/Isl and now SherDil has taken a strong start in these cities. Their similar performance in these cities indicates that the topic of Pakistan Air Force is also playing a contribution in these areas.

Utter nonsense this movie is doing great at the boxoffice

Dawn and et are hating on it for political reasons

. .
Stories are bland and copy/pasted over and over.

If hollywood just copied Rambo or Top Gun every single year people would stop watching. Pakistani film industry needs a lot more interesting stories if they want to be competitive.

.
PAF media ventures need some introspection on the producers, writers and directors they work with.
There's a formula to it, sadly:

1. 30-year-old starts at PAF Risalpur
2. PAF pilot meets an attractive lady, the two mysteriously go to the Northern Areas to sing and dance
3. PAF pilot marries the attractive lady in a wedding neither of them can afford
4. The father-in-law tells the PAF pilot to leave the PAF, become a banker
5. PAF pilot says no, shoots down the enemy.

. .
most of the latest songs , dramas and movies regarding the armed forces are simply below average. PAF songs of 80s and 90s are still better then today's . not a single paf drama or movie came up to the expectation of the public. starting from shahpar to todays sherdil all are just ok. i think majority of the public has seen topgun and they want similar action which seem very much real. its a shame really that what the hollywood did in 86 we still cant do same.

in my opinion if someone tries to make a movie about PAF it may have greater chance of success if it is more closer to reality. the glamor factor needs to be reduced and those bollywood style songs by some prostitu%es simply kill the thrill.
just look at the pic of the hero . it looks like a sqn ldr standing in front of cadets. at least give him a proper hair cut and cast a younger hero.

.
I was expecting some topgun type master piece
its sad we cant even emulate what Americans did 40 years ago
