Boston police have taken into custody three additional suspects in the 15 April bombing of the Boston Marathon.

The police department has released no further details of the suspects' identities or their alleged roles.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, a 19-year-old student, has been charged over the bombings, which killed three people and injured more than 260 others.

His 26-year-old brother, Tamerlan, was killed during a shoot-out with police in Boston on 19 April.

"Three additional suspects taken into custody in marathon bombing case. Details to follow," the Boston Police Department said.

Authorities had earlier suggested that the two brothers were believed to have worked alone.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was injured in the police manhunt, has been charged with using a weapon of mass destruction and malicious destruction of property resulting in death. He could be sentenced to death if convicted of the first charge.

When questioned by police in hospital, he said he and his brother were angry about the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mr Tsarnaev remains in a hospital prison.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev had reportedly been investigated by the FBI, but it found no evidence of a threat.

On Tuesday, President Barack Obama said law enforcement officials had followed protocol and were not at fault.

The Tsarnaev family has origins in the predominantly Muslim republic of Chechnya in southern Russia. The brothers had been living in the US for about a decade at the time of the attack. Dzhokhar was a US citizen, while Tamerlan was in the US on a Green Card.
