PAKISTAN'S FORMER HIGH COMMISSIONER IN COLOMBO SAYS IT WAS
INDIA'S RAW THAT TRIED TO ASSASINATE HIM IN SRI LANKA

By Walter Jayawardhana

Pakistan's former ambassador in Colombo who escaped an assassination attempt in the heart of Colombo has accused India's spy agency the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) which is run directly under Indian Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh of organizing the attack on his life.

The attack that occurred few weeks ago as the work of RAW was reported first , immediately after the attack by a Pakistan newspaper called the News but easily forgotten since there was no direct revelation by the victim and the denial of the Sri Lanka government who thought it was purely an act of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

The ambassador, Retired Col. Bashir Wali Mohamed who is officially known as the High Commissioner of Pakistan since both Sri Lanka and Pakistan are Commonwealth nations narrowly escaped the assassination bid while four Sri Lanka Army commandos and three bystanders died of the suspected C-4 plastic explosion.

Making a statement in Islamabad, Col. Wali was quoted having stated that it was not the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) who attacked him but India's powerful and feared RAW spy agency. Col. Bashir Wali Mohamed, who once headed Pakistani spy agency, before becoming an ambassador accused the Indian government of starting a proxy war in a third country.

The August 14 blast occurred on Pakistan's Independence day, near the heavily guarded hotels where Indian and South African cricket teams were residing having come to Colombo for a tri-nation cricket match. The South African team immediately withdrew in fear while the Indian team stayed on.

The retired Pakistani army colonel summoned reporters to his residence in Islamabad to reveal his knowledge of the Indian involvement and alleged that the Indian government had been upset at his appointment and claimed that RAW had "begun its dirty games" against him even before his arrival in Colombo, Sri Lanka in June 2004. He drew the attention of the reporters of how retired Indian intelligence official B. Raman had written articles in Sri Lankan newspapers urging the island nation's government not to accept his (Wali's) credentials as high commissioner. B. Raman was recently quoted very often in the Tamil net even after the assassination alleging that Pakistan was involved in a bid to assassinate the LTTE supreme Velupillai Prabhakaran, the man who was directly responsible for the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, the husband of Sonia Gandhi, the President of India's currently ruling Congress Party.

Wali denied that the cause of the assassination bid was a shipment of weapons that was to be shipped to Sri Lanka to fight the Tamil Tigers. He told reporters that he was the target of the attack of RAW and evidence collected pointed to that fact.

India's RAW had been involved in huge explosions that killed hundreds of civilians at a time when RAW was involved in the training and supplying arms and ammunition to the Tamil rebels including the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka. Ultimately, using that military power LTTE assassinated other Tamil leaders with impunity in India and in Sri Lanka and ultimately killed former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi that brought an end to the short honeymoon of RAW and the LTTE. LTTE negotiator recently tried to re-establish the broken relationship through an interview broadcast in a New Delhi television station, NDTV

^^^^Exactly. So according to Munshiji' in his book the 'other selfish and corrpt and misguided' people support and write supporting India. Ofcourse HE is none of those! as he hates India.

In all my comments on this forum I have never once used the words selfish, corrupt or misguided to describe the Indian supporters nor do I see myself as an Indian hater but am merely a patriotic Bangladeshi. I would hope that the Indian supporters will address the issues raised instead of being deliberately insulting and offensive.

The book review says these words mentioned in your book for those who support India. I do agree, you have not used these words on the forum though.

I can assure you that those words do not appear in the book in reference to those who support India. Could you kindly show me in which review does those words appear so I may clarify further.

India is aggressively pursuing a policy of maligning Bangladesh through clever manipulation of the local and international media. The objective is that to isolate Bangladesh from rest of the world and make it a pariah state. Our isolation from the international community would give India an upper hand in our domestic affairs. RAW has hand picked a few misguided people in Bangladesh, who believe in United India, to conduct subversive activities within the country These heinous activities are being conducted under the direct guidance and supervision of RAW. India wants to uproot the anti-India section from the Bangladesh politics or at least kill its political growth.

The author has also pointed out the fact that, Indian intelligence agency has picked up several highly ambitious intellectuals of the country to use them to defame Bangladesh and its culture. Bangladesh has been the land of people who are proud of their cultural heritage and tradition. It is the belief of RAW that Bangladesh will remain strong as long as this sense of pride in cultural heritage and tradition is there within the people. So, they have drawn up a clever plan to impose West Bengali Hindu culture in the name of Bengali culture upon the people of Bangladesh.
A handful of corrupt and ambitious cultural activists are being used to propagate West Bengali Hindu culture to destroy the uniqueness of the Bangladeshi culture. RAW has also infiltrated its agents into various cultural organizations such as Bangla academy, and Shilpakola academy to promote Indian culture within Bangladesh. The cultural ministry is just playing into the hands of the Indian intel agency.

And some more in some other reviews too. I guess the reviewer is filling in his own comments.

.
A Bangladeshi national in the pay of RAW can only be described as a traitor and Fifth Columnist. The words selfish and corrupt are too mild and I do not think that my comment in this regard should come under scrutiny. If an Indian national was in the pay of a foreign intelligence agency what would you describe him as - a super patriot or a good businessman? I think this issues is diverting us away from the line of argument that the article below was meant to clarify -

Well, this is speculation. Some one just posts that it might be a RAW activity and every one takes it at face value. Its rather much more likely that it was the LTTE.

But this is not related. I was talking about the fact that in the first review, the reviewr calls those who promote having better relations with India, rather than China are being labelled as 'misguided, ambitious,' etc, etc.

.
It would seem from your analysis that only the Nepalese, Bangladeshis, Sri Lankans and Pakistanis are all biased but not Indian writers.

I never said that. There are hundreds of writers on the Indian side who hyperbolic articles. If the reader is smart enough they can seen through it.
However within your book there seems to be a delibrate effort to include "views which match your views". And you were talking about alternate point of view.

Yes I would.

Mr.Munshi, posters at forum like the current one put across their view with substantial statements to back that up. It does not matter what I or you believe. It matters how you are ready to prove what you believe. I believe world is flat. Now should you take at face value...since "Ye I would" believe it is flat.

Its effort to become independent by seeking military equipment from a third country.
RAW would fund a guerilla campaign just to prevent Nepal from buying arms from another nation? You believe that is the objective?
For your kind information Nepal buys arms from UK and US also.cant the `nepalese buys most of the arms from India becoz it is cheaper than UK or US?
Now obviously you would raise the question why India does not allow Chinese arms. Does Nepal need arms to "display their international relation " or safeguard their security? If the arms provide security havent they done their job? Now if India so easily allow Chinese access to Nepal, in a future conflict, when Chinese troops would be launched from Nepal wont the world call Indians as dorks?

Since you have written "India Doctrine",I hope you must have spend a sec to think about. Or havent?

Yes they do. I think the Sri Lankan government also recognizes this that is why Col. Karuna was able to make common cause with them against the LTTE.
So difference among LTTE groups is considered Sri Lankan government's acceptance of Tamil rights for the splinter group? or you saying a "promise" of equal rights was the reason for the break up?

This is the reason why RAW prefers continuous instability in that region of Sri Lanka.
Did India ask the Sri Lankan government to launch the latest offensive against the LTTE?

I said it was indicative of RAW collusion.
Yeah ball bearings which were captured by Indian coast guards, announced on Indian media, is a proof that India is supplying LTTE. Indian Coast guards proving to the world that RAW is involved!

How much infrastructure does it require for you or me to manufacture ball bearings,If you or me believe in LTTE's cause? Does it require RAW to help me out?

This is certainly the belief of a large section of Sri Lankan society.
Yeah just like you who is more than eager to believe conspiracy theories.
Just like you,who conveniently skipped answering the question regarding the story about "faulty" radar! Because the answer to conspiracy theories is just too mundae to believe!

Mr Munshi, with due respect your knowledge is no better than a normal guy reading a daily newspaper. All you done is put together some conspiracy theory which frequently comes up to spice up the boring daily news and declared it as the "Irrefutable Proof of Indian Imperialism".

India has tended to support elements within the Awami League but has also infiltrated other political parties and state institutions through RAW. RAW has been most active amongst journalists, cultural personalities and certain human rights groups that have secessionist tendencies like the HRCBM. India's purpose is not the establishing of stability in Bangladesh but to instigate instability to serve their purpose of control.
That is almost the whole of Bangladesh!

These are allegations that have been made by India but have never been proven. In such a densely populated country such as Bangladesh if training camps existed they would have been discovered long ago. If India is so sure about these training camps why has it never been able to produce satellite or photographic imagery of their existence. So far there has been no evidence provided that political parties in Bangladesh fund ULFA and such an allegation is absolutely absurd.

Satellite imagery? Mr Munshi how difficult is for a official who believes in Indian Conspiracy to deliberately find faults with it?
And who has to say it has been proved? Bangladeshi newspapers? Were you privacy to such inter-governmental meeting?

Let me enlighten you up with the latest ! From your own Foreign minister. Apparently he did not deny the presence of ULFA.

NDTV: Previous governments in Bangladesh have always issued a blanket denial that anti India militants are operating from there. So you agree that they are?

Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury: It is not for me to talk about what happened in the past but this government has given all kinds of signals to India saying that we will not permit this to the extent possible. But we will not allow any activities which India deems unfriendly and inimical to its interest
http://www.ndtv.com/convergence/ndtv/story.aspx?id=NEWEN20070007806

I also deny that ULFA leaders are residing in Dhaka as I have never personally seen them and no photographs have been produced to show that they are in this country.
Mr Munshi, they do-not wear ULFA identity badge. As far the proof for it, being you personally seeing them, that might be too much of asking.

I know that Bangladesh intelligence does not engage in destabilizing tactics which is the hallmark of RAW and the only country in South Asia that complains about Bangladesh intelligence is India whereas every other country in the region has complaints against Indian intelligence. You do not see Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bhutan make accusations against Bangladesh intelligence but they have all had bad experiences with RAW.
Bangladesh not having problems with Nepal,Pakistan,Sri Lanka,Maldives,Bhutan etc, cant that be because of a simple fact that they dont share border? Isn't it in world politics most of the time policies of a nation effect their neighbours the most? I guess you get the drift.

Since the relation of Bangladesh with India is driven by Indian Conspiracy, lets look at your other neighbour shall we.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/1028604.stm

t is not clear why the Burmese authorities might have moved their troops close to the border or lay landmines.

But local journalists say it could be linked to an increase in insurgent activities in border areas.

Apparently Burma seems to have the same complaint. Burmese Imperialist Conspiracy?

Another incident for you!

Bangladesh and Burmese border guards have exchanged fire amid rising tension over a controversial dam project on the Naaf rive
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/1106521.stm

India's neighbours can produce any type of goods better and cheaper than India that is why it puts up unfair tariffs on these imports to protect its market from competition.

Then why sell to India? why is Bangladesh so desperate to sell to India when it levies so high tariffs? Why doesn't Bangladesh sell to other countries in the world, if good are produced "better and cheaper" than India?
It sounds as if you are complaining that India doesnot "easily" allow Bangladesh to make money in Indian market..a greedy wish I should say.

When the emperor of cheap goods china itself could not kill the local Indian industry, you say Indian companies are scared to import from Bangladesh?

By the way Mr.Munshi I am still waiting for mention about products from Bangladesh which you declared has the potential to bring down the Indian economy! I am eager to know.

India has been supporting the Nepalese terrorists

By Dr. Khagendra Thapa

UK and the USA must note that India had been supporting the Nepalese terrorists until two years ago. Maybe India is still supporting the insurgents even today. The Nepalese insurgents get all their weapons from India. The majority of the insurgents? leaders are living comfortably in India with the full knowledge of Indian authorities.

Leader of Nepal's largest party, Mr. Madhav Kumar Nepal met the Nepalese insurgent leaders in Lucknow, India about two years ago. It was the second time Mr. Nepal visited them in India. He had previously met them in Siliguri, India. Similarly, Mr. Girija Koirala met the leaders of the insurgent group at least two times in India. One of the meetings was reported to have been arranged by Indian politicians.

Recently, UK and the USA have joined hands with India in opposing the justified and essential moves taken by His Majesty the King of Nepal. Without having the proper knowledge of India?s violation of human rights, UK and USA have joined hands with India in order to humiliate and intimidate Nepal into submission to the Indian pressure. This was a very unwise and unfriendly act on the part of UK and the USA.

All friends of Nepal must note that India is not committed to human rights and democracy within India itself. Therefore, what right does India have to talk about human rights and democracy in Nepal when it does not allow its own citizens to enjoy those rights?

By poking its nose on the internal affairs of Nepal, India has shown its true intentions on Nepal. India wants Nepal to behave like Bhutan. Bhutan is basically almost an Indian colony. Nepal refused and fought back the British when the latter tried to colonize Nepal. Even the British Empire could not colonize Nepal.

Therefore, it is a futile exercise on the part of India to attempt to colonize Nepal even if it is on the pretext of bringing democracy and human rights. Speaking of human rights and democracy in India: do the people of Kashmir deserve human rights and democracy? When was the last election held in Kashmir? Do they have the right to self determination? Can India allow a referendum to see if Kashmiris want to be an independent nation, or part of India or part of Pakistan?

How about the human rights and democracy for the people of Khalistan, Nagaland and Mizoram? If India believes in true democracy and press freedom why does it not allow the press freedom and let journalists visit these areas? Did India follow human rights and press freedom and freedom of religion when it massacred the Sikhs right in the Holy Golden temple in Punjab?

An illustration of India?s lack of commitment for human rights and democracy is the presentation in the US House of Representatives by Congressman Doolittle and Congressman EDOLPHUS TOWNS, which is given below:

HON. JOHN T. DOOLITTLE presented in the US House of Representatives

WEDNESDAY, JULY 21, 1999, Congressional Record, Page: E1616

Mr. Speaker, the world watches carefully the situation in Kashmir, where the Indian military attacked the Kashmiri freedom fighters to shut down the seventeen freedom movements within its borders. The effort did not go well for India, despite its claims of victory. An Indian military spokesman admitted that Indian troops were 'dying like dogs .'

The Sikhs in Punjab, Khalistan have been very concerned that this war will spread to their homeland, where they are also seeking self-determination. One of India's strategies for keeping the freedom movements from succeeding is to set the minority nations against each other. In pursuit of this divide-and-rule strategy, they have sent Sikh soldiers to fight the Kashmiris, as they have done in Nagaland. The Christians in Nagaland have been fighting for their freedom for the last 52 years.

The Council of Khalistan wrote an open letter to the Sikh soldiers and officers. They called on the soldiers and officers to stop 'dying like dogs' for the Indian government. The letter asked Sikh soldiers if they would rather die as Sikh martyrs or mercenaries for Indian oppression. It urged them to stop shooting at their fellow freedom fighters in Kashmir and join the movement to free Khalistan.

The reasons why Khalistan and the other nations of South Asia should enjoy their freedom have been outlined by many of us in the past, and they have not changed. Amnesty International reports that thousands of political prisoners are being held without charge or trial. Some of them have been in illegal custody for 15 years.

If India is democratic and if there is no support for the freedom movements, as India claims, then why not let the peoples of the subcontinent vote on their political status? America should support self-determination for all the nations and peoples. We should declare our support for the freedom movements and the right of self-determination and stop aid to the repressive Indian regime.

INDIA IS USING CHEMICAL WEAPONS IN KASHMIR; U.S. SHOULD STOP ITS PRO-INDIA TILT

HON. EDOLPHUS TOWNS
In the US House of Representatives
THURSDAY, JUNE 17, 1999
[Congressional Record, Page: E1317]

Mr. Speaker, I was disturbed to find out that India has been using chemical weapons in its war against the freedom fighters of Kashmir. Reuters, CNN, the BBC, the Associated Press, and others have all reported that India fired chemical weapons shells into Pakistan. Remember that India's nuclear tests last year started the nuclear arms race in South Asia, which is very destabilizing to our ally Pakistan, to India , the subcontinent, and the world.

In recent days, there have been news reports of a mass exodus from border villages in Punjab, the homeland of the Sikhs. According to at least one report, 70 percent of the population of these villages has fled. These Sikhs are apparently afraid that India's war on the freedom fighters will spread to Punjab. There are good reasons to believe this. India sent a new deployment of troops to Punjab, Khalistan. These troops are on top of the half-million troops who were already stationed in Punjab to suppress the Sikh freedom movement.

Mr. Speaker, this situation is entirely India's responsibility. India that started the conflict in Kargil to wipe out the freedom movement in Kashmir and scare the other freedom movements into submitting to Indian rule. India introduced nuclear weapons to South Asia last year and introduced chemical weapons into this conflict. These are weapons of mass destruction, Mr. Speaker. Indian has brought these weapons of mass destruction to South Asia. Why do we still give aid from American tax dollars to India ? ??.

The same countries which have opposed the steps taken by the King of Nepal have supported the military rulers in Pakistan, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Mozambique, and many other countries. The UN and other countries which are opposing the actions of the King of Nepal do support the absolute rule by Kings of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Brunei, Bhutan, Swaziland, and many others.

In many of the Arab countries females are not even allowed to vote in any kind of elections. They are not allowed to show their face in public. Females are not allowed to drive. Well, no one has said anything about the human rights of the people of these countries. Therefore, is it not a double standard to disapprove the temporary measures applied by the King of Nepal? The UN, the EU, and others also support the communist countries such as People?s Republic of China, Vietnam, Cuba, North Korea and Cambodia. Therefore, why is it a problem when the King of Nepal imposes a temporary state of emergency to control a communist insurgency and massive corruption by the government?

It seems that big, powerful and rich countries have separate rules and basically a double standard for small and poor countries. Even the UN favors the big and powerful countries. It is apparent that small countries do not have the right to the rule of law. They do not have the right to protect their own citizens from the terrorists. They do not have the right to stop plundering by corrupt politicians. Is that the justice that UK and the USA stand for? Did Congressman Leach and State Department Official Mr. Camp look at the congressional records mentioned above before they talked about collaborating with India concerning the developments in Nepal on Congressional Hearings on Nepal?

By taking advantage of the internal problems in Nepal, India has also illegally built a number of dams in the rivers flowing from Nepal into India. The dams are built so high and so close to the Nepalese border that a number of villages and towns on the Nepalese side have been drowned. A lot of people have been forced to become homeless and destitute as a result of the Indian actions which are against the International norms and treaties. Moreover, India is also busy moving the border pillars along the Nepal-India border. It was reported that India has already illegally moved 64 border pillars and is in the process of moving more of them because Nepal is too busy fighting a civil war.

Our friendship with both UK and the USA is much older than young India. Therefore, Nepalese people request both the governments not to support India in its attempt to subjugate Nepal at its time of great crisis. Nepalese people would appreciate it if they get the support when they need it the most, which is undoubtedly right now.

this is clear that india want nepal to become what afghanistan was to pakistan. i always thought that pakistan supported the insurgents. i guess i was wrong. as a strategic move i dont see anything wrong with this india is doing what every other country does. but sooner or later i think the ISI will start supporting the people that will oppose india if it already is not this could even more instability at india's border and give some breathing room to the insurgency in that part of india. So as far as i am concerned GOOD STUFF i appologise to all my indian brothers here. i hope they are all safe
inshallah.

.
I cant believe You guys debating with this guy, he is exactly bangaldeshi kind of our Hyperbole Arundhati Roy, who lives in la la land and identifies everything in this world as a conspiracy; trys to fit every decision and situation to his view point, ignoring the obivious truth.

.
OMG, they are saying India support MAOISTS?!?!?!?!?!
This is as far as it gets. India HATES MAOISTS with a burning passion. LOL, now i'v seen all.

.
However within your book there seems to be a deliberate effort to include "views which match your views".

The views that are contained in the book were taken primarily from Indian sources that included the opinions of politicians, diplomats, military officers, journalists and former intelligence operatives of India. These were akin to confessions of India’s nefarious activities in regard to its neighbours.

It does not matter what I or you believe. It matters how you are ready to prove what you believe.

The book contains thousands of references and documented materials and should be sufficient proof to go on until each and every instance can be refuted.

Does Nepal need arms to "display their international relation” or safeguard their security?

The ability to defend ones territory is a prerequisite of statehood. By India guaranteeing Nepal’s security (in order to safeguard its own) it undermines Nepal’s sovereignty. Nepal does not view China as a threat and so should acquire weapons on the open market without interference from India.

So difference among LTTE groups is considered Sri Lankan government's acceptance of Tamil rights for the splinter group? or you saying a "promise" of equal rights was the reason for the break up?

The cause or reason for the insurgency in Sri Lanka no longer seems to exist for the Karuna group and so they now oppose the LTTE.

Did India ask the Sri Lankan government to launch the latest offensive against the LTTE?

No but what difference does this make?

Yeah ball bearings which were captured by Indian coast guards, announced on Indian media, is a proof that India is supplying LTTE. Indian Coast guards proving to the world that RAW is involved!

Actually I was referring to an earlier incident in which the SL navy destroyed a LTTE ship and discovered ball bearings with Indian markings that were amongst the debris.

How much infrastructure does it require for you or me to manufacture ball bearings, if you or me believe in LTTE's cause? Does it require RAW to help me out?

When the ball bearing containers show Indian markings this is indicative that they were manufactured in India. When the JMB and Harkatul Jihad al Islami (HuJi) were carrying out attacks on civilians and public institutions the explosives recovered from their hideouts bore Indian ordinance markings and such types of explosives are not manufactured in Bangladesh. This seems to indicate Indian collusion at some level.

Mr Munshi, with due respect your knowledge is no better than a normal guy reading a daily newspaper.

The information gathered for the book includes books, magazines, newspapers, journals and intelligence websites.

Satellite imagery?

When the Americans claimed the existence of terrorist training camps in Afghanistan before the invasion they produced satellite imagery and photographs to back up their allegations. Why cannot India do the same for the alleged ULFA camps in Bangladesh? Maybe it is because they do not exist.

From your own Foreign minister. Apparently he did not deny the presence of ULFA.

He did not admit it either. He was merely stating that the Bangladesh government would look into the matter. This is an appropriate diplomatic response to the recent aggressive and hostile statements made by Indian politicians that India should invade Bangladesh and destroy these fictitious camps. The last time Indian troops set foot inside Bangladesh (which was almost 6 years ago) it had its foot cut off. The diplomatic method I think is a better solution overall.

Mr Munshi, they do-not wear ULFA identity badge.

I am sure that the RAW operatives inside Bangladesh would be able to identify them and pass on the information to the law enforcement agencies in Bangladesh with proof of location and photographs. That this type of evidence has never been produced seems to suggest that ULFA presence in Bangladesh is a fabrication and an excuse to pressure Bangladesh on other issues.

Bangladesh not having problems with Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bhutan etc, cant that be because of a simple fact that they dont share border?

Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary are at the centre of Europe and share borders with each other and several other countries but I do not see them having disputes with their neighbours as India has with all its neighbours.

Apparently Burma seems to have the same complaint.

These were isolated incidents that occurred almost seven years ago without any long term effects. That you should bring up these irrelevant issues shows the paucity and weakness of your argument. These incidents with Burma were very minor and insignificant but India’s borders are bloody in comparison.

Why doesn't Bangladesh sell to other countries in the world, if good are produced "better and cheaper" than India? It sounds as if you are complaining that India does not "easily" allow Bangladesh to make money in Indian market..a greedy wish I should say.

Bangladesh does sell goods and produce to other countries in the world. Indian goods can enter Bangladesh markets with only limited hindrances allowing Indian businessmen to make a profit here. Why should Bangladeshi businessmen not be accorded the same facilities and opportunity to make money in India. This I think shows a miserly and a begger thy neighbour attitude on the part of India. Bangladesh has every right to be resentful about Indian trade practices.

By the way Mr. Munshi I am still waiting for mention about products from Bangladesh which you declared has the potential to bring down the Indian economy! I am eager to know.

I did not say solely the products produced by Bangladesh but by goods exported by all countries in South Asia other than India. The consequence for South Asia India’s duplicity was explained in the following report in The Daily Star -

Saarc business leaders see India a roadblock

February 22, 2007

Leading stakeholders in the Saarc region's trade viewed the Indian attitude as a major roadblock to boosting intra-regional trade.

"Their (India's) mindset is to derive maximum benefit for them and corner others in the region through protecting their market by uniquely imposing NTBs (non-tariff barriers)," said a leading businessman from Sri Lanka, requesting anonymity.

He voiced his frustration about the region's business prospect to the news agency on the sideline of the two-day Saarc Business Leaders Conclave that concluded here Sunday.

"Yes, there are some loose ends," Foreign Trade Minister of Sri Lanka Professor GL Peiris said, pointing out that the major problems of the India-Sri Lanka FTA is the non-tariff barriers.

He, however, mentioned that the FTA, of course, benefited Sri Lanka as its exports increased by around 300 percent since the signing of the bilateral FTA.

"We've implemented FTA more successfully with Pakistan than India," said another businessman from Sri Lanka Samantha Kumarasinghe, who have a business establishment in Bangladesh.

The chairman and managing director of Multichemi Bangladesh (Pvt) Limited narrated his business experiences both in Bangladesh without having FTA and in India having FTA.

"We've got much better opportunity in Bangladesh than India," he said, adding that Bangladesh is an excellent place for doing business.

"Their (India's) attitude is not favourable for others till today. If the situation is changed, it's OK," Kumarasinghe said.

He added that India should remove the NTBs soon to show a genuine gesture for boosting regional trade as the Indian Minister of State for Commerce Jai Ram Ramesh told the conclave.
