Mingora blast kills 3, injures scores

MINGORA: At least three people were killed and 15 others injured in a huge blast in Mingora area of Swat, Geo News reported Thursday.

According to the initial report poured from the blast site, the blast occurred at the central bus stand of the city, which is usually a crowded place and was bustling with people at the time of blast.

The injured have been rushed to hospital in Saidu Sharif. Most of the injured are in critical condition. The relief activities are in progress at the blast site.

The blast was massive that at least eight vehicles and over 50 shops were damaged.

Soon, after the blast, the commercial areas of the city were closed down.

According to eyewitnesses, it was a suicide blast.

It should be mentioned here that a tip-off regarding the entry of suicide bombers was received some days ago, resulting in stepped up security arrangements in the city.

MINGORA: An alleged suicide attack in Mingora has claimed the lives of five people with up to 18 others injured on Thursday.

Initial reports suggest that a suicide bomber blew himself up at the general bus stand near Sohrab chowk. The area where the attack took place was one of the more crowded areas of the city where a peace festival to celebrate the end of the military operation was underway. Many tourists were in Swat valley for this festival.

Earlier there were reports that two suicide bombers were to carry out attacks soon, and there is speculation that this may have been one of the targets.

Security forces have cordoned off the area of the blast and the injured have been shifted to nearby hospitals.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan, July 15, 2010 (AFP) - A bomb attack killed two people and wounded at least 15 others Thursday in the main town of Pakistan's Swat valley, where the military put down a Taliban uprising last year, police said.

It was the first such attack in the northwestern district since May and underscored prevailing insecurity in a region that was until last year had been largely outside government control and paralysed by Taliban militants.

Police said initial reports suggested that a suicide bomber was responsible. The bomb ripped through a busy street outside a bus terminal in Mingora near an army patrol, indicating the military could have been the target.

Television footage showed volunteers carrying a body away from the blast scene, while others frantically pulled at the twisted car doors to rescue other victims in a street littered with burnt out vehicles.

"At least two people were killed and 15 wounded," said Qazi Jamil, police chief for the northwestern Malakand region that includes Swat.

"The blast occurred by the bus terminal. An army patrol was passing from the road," he said.

Mingora is 125 kilometres (80 miles) northwest of the capital Islamabad and the main town in Swat, a mountain valley of enormous natural beauty that was once a popular tourist destination for Pakistanis and Westerners.

MINGORA: A suicide bomber blew himself up in an apparent attack at a security convoy, killing at least five people including two women and injuring 45 others, including women and children bomber hit a security convoy in Mingora, Geo News reported Thursday.

The blast occurred at central bus stand, which is usually a crowded place. The bus stand was teeming with people at the time blast, causing huge number of people to be victims of the blast.

Casualties are feared to rise.

At the time of blast, a security cavalcade was around passing by.

The blast was so powerful that at least eight vehicles and nearby 50 shops were also damaged in the blast.

Law enforcers cordoned off the area soon after the blast, as the relief activities are in progress.

The 45 injured have been transported to Saidu Sharif General Hospital, where paramedics confirmed five casualties.

Soon, after the blast, the commercial areas of the city were closed down and unannounced curfew has been clamped in the city.

It should be mentioned here that a tip-off regarding the entry of suicide bombers was received some days ago, resulting in stepped up security arrangements in the city.

MINGORA, Pakistan – An apparent suicide bombing near a bus terminal in Pakistan's Swat Valley killed five people and wounded at least 58 on Thursday, officials said, a sign that Islamist militants remain active in the northwest region despite a massive army operation.
The explosion went off around noon in Mingora, the main town in the one-time tourist haven that was overrun by the Taliban in 2007.
Pakistani TV footage showed vehicles bent and twisted due to the force of the blast. Some men were desperately trying to open the doors of a car to reach a woman and man sitting in the front who were bloodied and appeared unconscious.
The area struck was crowded, so the death toll could rise significantly. Senior police official Qazi Ghulam Farooq said five people died, including two women, and that officials believed a suicide bomber was involved. At least 58 people were wounded, he said.
The Pakistan military launched its biggest operation against the Taliban in Swat in 2009 after a failed attempt at a peace deal that included pledges to impose Islamic law in the area. The operation forced some 2 million people to flee, but after a few months, the army said it had taken control and many of the refugees returned home.
Still, violence has occasionally flared in Swat, shaking people's confidence. A handful of targeted killings of anti-Taliban elders in particular has worried those who fear the insurgents are staging a comeback in the valley.
In recent weeks, several major suicide attacks have shaken Pakistan. Last week, a pair of suicide bombers blew themselves up in the Mohmand tribal region, killing at least 102 people in the deadliest attack in the U.S.-allied nation this year.
The attacks come as Washington is pushing Pakistan to do even more to root out militant groups that use its soil to plan attacks on Western troops across the border in Afghanistan.
The U.S. has also launched more than 100 missile strikes against Taliban and al-Qaida fighters in Pakistan's semiautonomous tribal area along the Afghan border. The attacks have been especially frequent in North Waziristan, the home base of the al-Qaida-linked group led by Jalaluddin Haqqani and his son Siraj.
Militants have responded by assassinating tribesmen whom they accuse of spying, including two men whose bullet riddled bodies were found Thursday in the Datta Khel area of North Waziristan, said an intelligence official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.
The bodies were accompanied by notes saying they were killed for spying on the Taliban, he said.
