RAWALPINDI: Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has booked a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader for allegedly helping Afghan nationals obtain Pakistani identity cards.
Raja Tariq Mehboob Kiani, who is the party’s vice-president of Punjab chapter, is accused of verifying forms of Afghan nationals through which they obtained computerised national identity cards (CNICs) from the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).
Over 200 arrested over issuance of fake CNICs to foreigners, Senate body told
The development came after the FIA arrested seven Afghan nationals with Pakistani identity cards and passports, obtained fraudulently. The suspects were arrested during raids conducted in different parts of Rawalpindi.
Seven Afghan nationals arrested were identified as Zafar Khan, Sher Ali Khan, Momin Khan, Gul Marjan Khan, Gul Rehman Khan, Zahir Khan and Abdul Hameed. Two other suspects managed to escape. Raids are being conducted to arrest them.
Kiani, a businessman and former president of Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, reportedly verified the forms when he was Rawalpindi district Nazim during the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) era.
Four Afghan nationals arrested with weapons, fake IDs
Kiani denies charges
The PTI leader, however, denied the charges.
Talking to Daily Express, he said he had never signed forms of any Afghan national ever.
Kiani is one of the many suspects booked by the investigation agency for helping Afghan nationals obtain Pakistani identity cards and passports.
Sources in the FIA said the agency had launched a campaign to arrest over a hundred Afghan nationals who are residing in Rawalpindi with identity cards either fake or obtained fraudulently.
They said the list of such Afghan nationals was prepared by the NADRA and handed over to FIA.
The arrested Afghan nationals will be produced before a judge today (Monday) to obtain their physical remand.
