25.01.2006
Russiaââ¬â¢s arms export agency Rosoboronexport, along with leading Russian defense enterprises, have prepared a package of contracts for the delivery of $4 billion worth of Russian arms and military equipment to Algeria. This information was disclosed by an industry source to the Interfax agency on Wednesday, Jan. 25.
ââ¬ÅWe have almost finished all the work on the package of contracts for deliveries of large batches of Russian arms to Algeria,ââ¬Â the source told the agency. He said that the package includes a contract for delivery of 37 multifunctional MiG-29SMT jet fighters.
In addition to this, the Russian arms export agency prepared contracts for the delivery of 28 Su-30 jet fighters, 8 divisions of Favorite surface-to-air missile systems and a batch of T-90S battle tanks.
Russian defense enterprises also signed a number of deals for the modernization and repair of arms and military equipment of Soviet (Russian) make that are currently being operated by the Algerian army. The payments for deliveries will be made under an intricate scheme which presupposes a partial write-off of Algerian debt to the former Soviet Union.
In the near future Algeria may also buy more than 50 Yak-130 training jets and about 30 Tunguska-M1 surface-to-air gun/missile systems.
