The FINANCIAL - Boeing Begins Final Assembly of India's 1st P-81 Aircraft

The FINANCIAL -- RENTON, Wash., June 21, 2011 -- Boeing began final assembly of the Indian navy's first P-8I long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft this month at the company's Renton factory. The P-8I, based on the Boeing Next-Generation 737 commercial airplane, is a variant of the P-8A Poseidon that Boeing is developing for the U.S. Navy.

The start of assembly work follows delivery of the plane's fuselage from teammate Spirit AeroSystems on May 29. Boeing workers have begun installing systems, wires and other small parts onto the fuselage. The P-8I's engines and wings will be installed later this summer.

"The P-8I is a result of a close partnership between Boeing's commercial and defense units to deliver the latest and best maritime reconnaissance capability to the world," said Dinesh Keskar, president, Boeing India. "This agreement highlights the true commitment Boeing has toward India."

"India is our first international customer for the P-8 and we are committed to delivering this aircraft on time," said Chuck Dabundo, Boeing vice president and P-8 program manager. "The timely start of assembly and our in-line production process will allow us to meet our goal and incorporate significant efficiencies as we move forward on the program."

Boeing was selected on the basis of a global tender by the government of India. The contract for procurement of eight P-8I aircraft, with an option for four additional aircraft, was signed on Jan. 1, 2009.

The P-8I will provide India with speed, reliability, persistence and room for growth to satisfy the country’s maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare requirements now and into the future. The aircraft features open system architecture, advanced sensor and display technologies, and a worldwide base of suppliers, parts and support equipment.

Boeing, the world's leading aerospace company and the largest manufacturer of commercial jetliners and military aircraft combined, has significantly expanded its footprint in India in both civil aviation and defense. Boeing is partnering with India's leading technology and manufacturing companies to build a supply chain out of India. The company also has opened a Research and Technology center in Bengaluru to collaborate with India’s technical talent for research in aero structures, materials and network systems. Boeing India's corporate office is in New Delhi.

THANX buddy. This damn thing will be a realy the ultimate predator of submarines. The Tu 142M is also being modernisd with latest radar, avionics, sonobuoys, datalink, ecm and esm. With 12 P 8I,5 Il 38 and 8 upgraded Tu 142 IN will be have full control of IOR.Good thing is IN can constantly practise anti sub drills with the upgraded Kilos, upcoming far stealthier(from any thing PN has)Scorpines,Arihants and Akula 2 with support from various surface vessels. Thus they can put down a very effective and deadly anti submarine network and constantly check their capability.Though I think IN should have ordered atleast 18 P8i.
And after complition of sea bed sonar array the IOR will become near fullproof.
REGARDS....

How much are you paying for each plane? and was there a tender for it? cant russia/Europe supply anything similar?

1. Total deal of US $2.1 billion for 8 aircrafts means US$ 262.5 million for each aircraft.

2.) Boeing P-8 Poseidon is the best Multimission Maritime Aircraft ever in the history of the World. USA and India will be only operator till now.

So this would enhance the indian navy`s capability to detect the sub-marines and to destroy them before they can do any damage.

Stratigically this was needed desperately by the IN considering the China`s intrest in their sub-marine programs.

We don;t want F35 yet we are happy to buy this. Sure, its stripped down and such, and the clauses were not signed. The point is that America makes a damn fine product.

Not sure what will be missing in P8-I; however, in case of c-17 the following were missing/replaced,

AN/ARC-222 Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System (SINCGARS) - Manufactured by Magnovox and administered by the US Air Force

KV-119 IFF Digital Transponder (Mode 4 Crypto Applique) - Manufactured by Raytheon and administered by the US Air Force

TACTERM / ANDVT Secure Voice (HF) Terminal - Administered by the US Air Force

VINSON KY-58 Secure Voice (UHF/VHF) Module - Administered by the US Air Force

Rockwell-Collins AN/ARC-210(V) SATCOM Transceiver's COMSEC/DAMA embedded RT is replaced with an RT that has no COMSEC/SINCGARS
