BNP-Jamaat backed candidates win majority in upazila polls
BNP and Jamaat backed candidates won in the polls of most of the 97 upazilas under forty districts across the country. Ruling Awami League backed candidates won unofficially in 33 upazilas while BNP backed candidates won in 41 upazilas. Jamaat backed candidates also won in fifteen upazilas while others won in the remaining upazilas in the unofficial results of 97 upazilas. Earlier on Wednesday the voting in 97 upazilas ended without any major incident with the beginning of anxious moments of counting. The voting continued till 4:00pm without any break after it started at 8:00am in the morning. No major incident of violence was reported during the voting in the upazilas. However, some sporadic incidents of violence were reported in several upazilas. Some BNP backed and rebel candidates have also boycotted the election alleging rigging. They also called hartal in at least nine upazilas protesting the alleged rigging.
BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi alleged that the government is holding stage-managed upazila election under favourable administration.
The second phase of upazila polls will be held in 117 upazilas on February 27, while the upazilas will go for polls in phases.
