Lahore: Pakistan's information ministerPervaiz Rashidhas said the blast that killed two people, including a police officer, near theGaddafi Stadiumhere was a suicide attack.

The blast took place at 9 PM Friday when a day-night match between Pakistan and Zimbabwe was underway.

"An attempt to attack the Gaddafi Stadium was foiled by the gallantry of a police official, who lost his life while trying to stop the attacker near Kalma Chowk," Rashid told GeoNews.

A police sub-inspector and a citizen were killed when a suicide bomber blew himself up while riding on a rickshaw near Kalma Chowk, hardly less than a kilometre from the Gaddafi Stadium.

"The gas cylinder fixed in the auto rickshaw was exploded. Two persons including a policeman were killed in the blast. Forensic samples had been collected from the site to determine the nature of the explosion," Lahore police chief Amin Wains said.

Four policemen and a civilian were injured in the attack. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital where the sub- inspector and a civilian were pronounced dead.

Soon after the blast the Pakistan Cricket Board issued a statement, saying it was a "power transformer blast" that was caused by malfunctioning.

Police had cordoned off the area and no one, including media, was allowed to enter the blast site.

Local electronic media had at first reported an explosion close to Gaddafi stadium (on the claim of PCB) but later took any news about the blast off air after it was claimed that the explosion was caused by an electricity transformer in the area.

Rashid praised the actions of Pakistan Broadcasters Association for "covering up" the news while the cricket match was underway.

More than 20,000 people were in the stadium and panic could cause stampede, he said.

However, the police have denied that the was a suicide attack.

The Punjab government has given a "presidential" security to the Zimbabwe Cricket Team to ensure no terror incident takes place during its tour.

This is the first tour of any international cricket team to Pakistan since the attack on Sri Lankan Cricket Team by Taliban in March 2009 in Lahore's Liberty Chowk (near Gaddafi Stadium) in which six members of the visiting team were injured.

LAHORE: A blast near the premises of Qaddafi Stadium on Friday—which took place during a one-day international match between Pakistan and Zimbabwe — was confirmed as a suicide attack by Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid, who said a sub-inspector lost his life while trying to stop the suicide bomber.

Talking to Geo News, Rashid said an attempt to attack the stadium was foiled by the gallantry of a police official, who lost his life while trying to stop the attacker near Kalma Chowk in Lahore. He added that six people were wounded in the incident.

The information minister praised the actions of Pakistan Broadcasters Association for "Covering up" the news while the cricket match was ongoing so as not to spread panic.

Local media had at first reported an explosion close to Gaddafi stadium but reports were taken off air after it was falsely asserted that the explosion was caused by an electricity transformer in the area.

Later, Punjab police’s IG Operations, while addressing a press briefing said two people — Sub-Inspector Abdul Majeed and a civilian Rizwan — were killed in the blast, DawnNews reported.

But the senior police official claimed that the blast happened inside a rickshaw and that forensic samples had been collected from the site to determine the nature of the explosion.

Lahore: Pakistan on Saturday confirmed that a blast that claimed two lives near a cricket stadium on Friday where a ODI match was underway was a suicide attack.

Pakistan Information and Broadcasting Minister Pervaiz Rashid, while talking to a local news channel, said an attempt to attack the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore when a Pakistan-Zimbabwe one-day International match was unbder way was foiled by the gallantry of a police officer, who lost his life while trying to stop the attacker near Kalma Chowk, reports Dawn.

The minister praised the actions of Pakistan Broadcasters Association for "covering up" the news while the cricket match was going on so as not to spread panic as the stadium was filled with 20,000 spectators at the time of incident.

Earlier, Pakistani media reported an explosion close to Gaddafi stadium but reports were taken off air after it was claimed that it was an an electricity transformer blast.

Later, the provincial police's inspector general of operations, while addressing a press briefing said two people -- Sub-Inspector Abdul Majeed and a civilian Rizwan -- were killed in the blast.

But the senior police official claimed that the blast happened inside a rickshaw and forensic samples were collected from the site to determine the nature of the explosion.

The attack has raised questions about whether the tour by Zimbabwe, the first by an international side since the Sri Lankan team was attacked by terrorists in Lahore in 2009, would continue.

The blast occurred at 9 p.m. when the day-night match between Pakistan and Zimbabwe was underway. The 50-over match continued uninterrupted and was won by Pakistan.

Whereas Indian media would do everything to keep it down, the evil nexus of Dawn, Geo, Tribune + Pervaiz Rashid do everything to undermine Pakistan to please their paymasters across the border.

These Media outlets must be banned. And with that this former Al-Zulifikar terrorist Pervaiz Rashid as well.

And yes, it was expected, India would do everything to stop cricket in Pakistan.

These M* F* extremists Ajit Devil, that defence minister and co should all be brought before the UN, but I don't expect anything from these Sharifs!

DUNYA NEWS

LAHORE (AP) - The Pakistan Cricket Board says the third and final one-day international against Zimbabwe will go ahead on Sunday at the Gaddafi Stadium despite security concerns after an explosion up close to the stadium on Friday night during the second ODI.

"The incident hasn t affected the tour and Zimbabwe will play its last match of the tour as planned," PCB spokesman Agha Akbar told The Associated Press on Saturday.

Akbar also said that all the tickets for Sunday s game have been sold out and a crowd of around 27,000 is expected.

Initially, police claimed the explosion was caused by electric transformer, in an apparent bid to avoid panic inside the stadium where at least 20,000 spectators were watching the game.

Thousands of policemen had been deployed outside the stadium and spectators had to endure several checkpoints while waiting in long queues hours before the start of the day/night matches at 4:00 p.m. local time (1100 GMT).

Zimbabwe is the first test-playing nation to tour Pakistan in six years since gunmen attacked on Sri Lanka team bus also in Lahore in 2009.

Eager to avoid a repeat of that incident and push the case for a full return of international cricket to the country, the government has provided VIP-level security to Zimbabwe s team. A fleet of security vans with armed gunmen shield the team buses during their travel from hotel to the stadium. Zimbabwe arrived on May 19 to play two Twenty20s and three ODIs.

The International Cricket Council has given official status to the series, but declined to send its match officials to Pakistan due to security concerns.

Too bad. even if it was a blast it didnt seem to make much of a difference :)

jab Pakistan main bomb nahee phat rahay hotay to saath waalay mulk main sab ki ph** rahi hoti hai.

Dont blame Indian or Pakistani Media for what your minister said. It was he who said it was a blast and congratulated the Pakistani media for suppressing the news

Something really sinister is going on.. Not sure if it's internal or external elements.. But the aim is to isolate Pakistan from rest of the world
