Eruptive lightnings flutter to and fro
Above the heights of immemorial hills;
Thirst-stricken air, dumb-throated, in its woe
Limply down-sagging, its limp body spills
Upon the earth. A panting silence fills
(Summer Silence by E. E. Cummings)
Notorious for its rape culture, dehumanization of minorities and inequality based of religious and caste bias, India has earned a reputation in the international media for its recurring failure to protect the basic rights of citizens. Under the “Hindutva” Hindu Supremist regime of the ruling majority party BJP, the situation has only worsened.
The spillover of Indian injustice from its own home ground to the disputed and illegally occupied territory of Kashmir comes as no surprise. Under the protection of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and Public Safety Act (PSA), Indian security and armed forces have operated tyrannically, loutishly crushing the Kashmiri voice and effort for plebiscite and freedom they are legally entitled to by International Law. The Indian government’s move to abrogate Article 370 and revoke Article 35A, articles providing autonomy and special rights to Kashmiris legally, has been met with criticism and judicially shut down because such moves are seen as unethical and violative.
The impunitive and dictative actions of India are self-evidentiary of a bigger plan of coercion already in motion. Under scrutiny by the international community for mass human rights violations next to those of Israel in Syria, the Indian leadership has attempted to label Kashmir as an internal territorial dispute that can be solved by wooing the Kashmiri population.
Attempts at hushing Kashmir’s locals and bending their will have been made by appointing interlocutors and developing infrastructure. However, Indian efforts to meddle with Kashmir have been shot down by locals who are staunch advocates of freedom from Indian illegal rule. The blinding of Kashmiri youth involved in protests by Indian Security Forces and the barbaric rape and murder of 8 year old Asifa made headlines in the recent past, but the Indian agenda to thwart Kashmir’s freedom movement remain undeterred.
Kashmir is central to the peace of the region, it is an internationally recognized disputed territory between Pakistan and India, both populous nuclear enabled countries. Keeping strategic implication and stability of the region in account, Indian cannot force a solution by reiterating its own previous stance on the dispute and trying to sweep Kashmir under the carpet.
Indian occupied Kashmir is suffering because India refuses to stop digging its diplomatic claws into the valley, but the suffering and pain must end. For the fascist BJP leaders of India, it may come as a surprise that the building of infrastructure is not a replacement for the lives taken and blood spilled of innocent Kashmiris. No intermediating interlocutor can bring peace to the crying mothers and daughters of the valley. And unless the Kashmir issue is recognized as the ideological, legal and humanitarian issue that it is, there is no solution.
