"This is just a front for the tobacco industry, it's going to affect the bottom line of companies and that's the smoke screen they have put up," said Bhavna Mukhopadhyay, Executive Director of the Voluntary Health Association of India.
"In a country like ours, where a large section of the population cannot read or write and more users are coming on board, pictorial warnings are the need of the hour," she stressed.

The head of that panel, BJP law-maker Dilip Kumar Gandhi, told NDTV today that India has little independent evidence to link cigarettes and cancer. "Does this (smoking) cause cancer or does not? What are the impacts? We have never done our own survey," he said.

Honestly do we really need a study to find out if smoking can cause cancer??

I was wondering when the Bhakt Brigade will start whitewashing. . And the responses vary from 'they are right' to 'AAP in delhi is doing this' to whatnot. Maybe one of you clowns should understand, whether AAP rules Delhi or not a person who smokes does have an extremely increased chances of getting cancer.

I really miss A Ramadoss who, as health minister singlehandedly fought the tobacco lobby and brought in stricter regulations designed cut smoking. Here we have a government that thinks we're so stupid we don't know that SMoking causes cancer.

Yes, we need studies. The parliamentary committee can not make decisions based on heresay. However why they chose to ignore plethora international studies on the subject is beyond me. And the committee only recommended more discussion on this. It is upto the government to decide whether to accept the panel's recommendations. This can not be infered 'BJP says cigarettes dont casue cancer' in any way, unless you have pathological hatred for BJP !!!
