What I hear about Bihar's Past is Glorious
Bihar's past is indded glorious but only till about early 5th century AD.

The first empire of Indian subcontinent was established near Rajgir in circa 600 BC, followed by the great kings like Bimbisara, Ajatsattu, Udayin, Kalashoka etc

It was during the reign of MahaPadmaNanda in Magadha during which Alexander invaded Indian subcontinent, but his soldiers refuse to follow his orders as they had heard about the huge army of Nanda empire.

Another great kingdom Mauryan empire rose from Magadha which ruled almost whole Indian subcontinent including Pakistan, Afghanistan for next 160 years, Pataliputra (Patna as their capital)

The golden age of Hindu era and Indian history is Gupta period which is said to be the largest empire of the world of that time ruled from present day Patna ruled for the next 300 years.

But the power later shifted to central India during reign of harshaVardhana and then to Delhi.

What has went wrong
Everything, from literacy to economy. Go to any part of the India (if not the world) and you can find Biharis, because of their migration in search of employment. Even if i cant give you the exact reason, I can assure you that like of Lalu are the people in Bihar who are responsible for the deteorioration of Bihar, by their caste tactics for almost everything.

I have read a little about Guptas in my studies . According to which , " After the fall of Guptas , Caste system became rigid and people started ruling in Individual groups/villages which later gave birth to many small kingdoms ."
Am I correct ???
Do u want to see Bihar as Mumbai , New York , London etc or Do U want Bihar to lead the race to Futuristic world ?

Bihar's history has little to do with its current state. There is a LOT of things that went wrong. The caste system pan India was not rigid till 1000A.D. some thing went wrong nation wide. The "Liberals" don't realize that India was vastly liberal society that the "west" could only dream of today. The prime example Khajuraho temples, which were built between 950 and 1050 CE by the Chandela dynasty.

Those sculptures in "all of our temples" offer a snap shot into the social acceptance level at that time. The rigidity that was not from the Manusmriti as Brit historians slapped us with (they couldn't agree even when to put a date on to it, concluded it was a "collective knowledge", in actual they complied the all the filth that was there, and gave it a name).

If you are a Kashmiri Pandit, i''l give you an analogy you can relate to, 8 kms from Anantnag there is one Martand Sun Temple, what happened to that temple happened pan India (your parents would shed some light on it). The rigidity of caste was a coping mechanism that came in to protect indigenous identity, and that made us regressive. Bihar was a center of Learning until one good Samaritan came along and Burned down a University. British Rule actually restored Bihar's administration (albeit with famine and what not, The atrocities they commited are a different bit, during the Zamindari system there was huge politics involved, all that gave more rigidity to the "system") at the time of Independence WB and Bihar were the two most well governed states in the country.

After Independence, it was Jagnath Mishra who started the Downfall, with Lalu feeding on the remains and burying the Rest.

Civilization is hideously fragile and there's not much between us and the horrors underneath, just about a coat of varnish. It take very little to destroy, let the system roll into chaos and we would be but savages in a few years.

OK

So downfall basically started towards the end of Medieval Period .
Any Idea on why Castes have become important factor in Bihar ?

With the glorious history specially in Maurya kingdom Magadha Part of Up and bihar was the center for the learning and educational hub. Two reason that distroyed it

1. Muslim invaders -- Muslim invaders didn't came for booty but also to spread islam, and they tried to distroy the cultural, and educational hub first -- distruction of Nalanda University.

2. Exploitation of Britishers -- Opium cultivation was very profitable, and once it was ceeded to the East India company, Zamindar system did havoc. causing caste evil to grow. This Cult remain till India got indendance, when zamindari system was abolished, but the weak state govenment, uneducation, and poor state of the common people causes this cult to live for long period.

3. Most of the people have voted Caste, but it is actually the product of various problems, distruction of educational instittutes, zamindar or overlord division of the people to rule which still prevail.

In the past, Bihar was the land of empire builders, thinkers, intellectuals, philosophers, strategists and revolutionaries like Chandragupta Maurya, Ashoka, and Kautilya, khodiram Bose, Dr. Rajendra Prasad and Jay Prakash Narayan.

It is this place where the words like Republic (Ganrajya) Democracy (Loktantra) was put into practice in 3rd Century B.C.It is present day Bihar where the first Indian empire ((Magadh) was established in 322 bc: by Chandragupta Maurya .

Bihar is the place, which has given birth to religion and revolution. Buddha and Mahavira the two great humanists found their enlightenment here and laid the foundation of two great religions Buddhism and Jainism. It is here that the tenth and last Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh was born and attained the sainthood of sikhism.

Nalanda University,The first Residential International University of the world Was founded in 5th.century A.D: Nalanda is known as the ancient seat of learning. 2,000 Teachers and 10,000 Students from all over the Buddhist world lived and studied here.

Sher Shah Suri-The lion king of India, a grate administrater, visionary and a social reformer in his fiver years of rule transformed the geographical and political landscape of the country. Some of his incredible achievements are:
Grand trunk road, stretching from Bengal-Delhi to Peshawar.

Introduction of land reform based of measurement of land.

Introduction of coins-rupees (dam) and custom duties.

Here what you want

So, why is it that the state which once used to show the light is gripped in darkness? Why is it that the erstwhile land of Intellectuals, thinkers, strategist and reformers is now inhabited by Ignorant, Criminals and self-centred politician? Let’s peep into the past to understand the present.

In the last crumbling days of Mughal empire,Bihar(Including formerly Awadh now Uttar Pradesh)used to be the part of Bengal under the rule of Nawab-Seraj-Ud-Daula.later on it became part of Presidency of Bengal under the control of East India company.Bihar got its statehood in the year 1911 with Patna as its capital.

East India company in connivance with Mir Jafar(trusted lieutenants of Nawab)defeated him in the battle of plassey (1757)and installed their stooge Mir Jafar on the thrown of Bengal.

Initially it was he with support from East India Company and later on his descendents-they continuously exploited the land of abundance labor and natural resources. Since then onwards Bihar (including Uttar Pradesh) has been the land of Nawab, Zamindaar, Chaowdhary, Maharaj, Thakur and Sahukaar. The land of landlords, for the landlords, by the landlords.

It was their lack of vision, self-centered attitude and greed (my ancestors included) which motivated them for the economic exploitation and inhuman treatment of peasants, farmers and laborers.

Be that too much of freedom or too much of suppression both leads to revolt.
Although revolt has many civilized forms, but poor, petrified, demotivated and frustrated peasants, farmers and labourers can’t use any of them because, according to them it does not signifies strength. They found their strength in gun.
So,they took the arms in their hand to defend their rights and dignity.

This new development gave rise to naxal movements from both the sides (On 25th May 1967 Communist leader Charu Majumdar launch a peasants' uprising at Naxalbari in Darjeeling district of West Bengal. This is how Naxalism was born)

After the rise of the movement, Industrialist and Businesses were targeted. One incident led to another and people started fearing for their life. Businessmen fled from the state for better pastures. This came as a blow to the state economy because rapid closer of business units and factories led to mass scale unemployment and the economic fall of the state.

It is this type of exploitative system which gives opportunity to people like Laloo Yadav and Mayawati to exploit the situation for their own individual benefit
by becoming the messiah of suppressed and down trodden.

In Present Day Bihar Loot, Kidnapping and Robbery is not a law and order problem but a flourishing and organized industry worth several millions.

Those people all left with the advent of enlightened philosophy and later converted to Abrahamic religion and left for Bengal. The servants and low caste were left behind.

It is said about Nalanda University (although it should be a myth) that when the Muslim invaders burned nalanda university, so much texts were archived their that it burned continually for months...

I have also heard something like that .

Actually it took several attack to distroy the Nalanda completely. Nalanda at that time had 2.5 Lakh student at the the extreme which with todays standard around 25 Lakh, do the calculation

There is no lack of strong leadership in Bihar as we have seen Lalu Yadav and Nitish Kumar ruling either in state or the union govt. since last 25 years. In fact, just before union elections Nitish Kumar was being touted as next PM of India and Lalu Yadav had also expressed his similar ambitions.

Colonial exploitation was universal in India during the british rule, so this too cant be a valid reason. So we are left with casteism and other social reasons behind its backwardness. Although casteism is still prevalent in all over India but I have never seen so much as its in Bihar. Along with caste its criminal bent of mind there. I have known a lot of Biharis during my college days and I noticed that feeling of casteism in them were nose deep. They were very friendly among themselves but behind their backs they named and abused everyone for their castes. Secondly, they always took pride in breaking the law, such as not respecting trafic signals or getting in a queueu... as if it was below their dignity. Thirdly, they always wondered how come public property is intact and not damaged or stolen. They would be proud that in Bihar public properties would be stolen within minutes. Fourthly, all they could think of was power - political, muscle or bureaucratic. IAS was their dream that too only for dowry and power or alternatively politics or govt. contracts. They loved talking about political bahubalis or political murders. Nothing Else.

To me, all these were nausiating and I knew that Bihar wont make any progress with this generation. However, now when I meet the youngters from Bihar, they are a changed lot. This generation's thought process and attitude is much different from their previous generation. They dont hesitate to admit their shortcomings and express their shame. I can now say that Bihar will be a completely changed state after 10-20 years.

Bihar is 80% dalit (includes Bhumihar dalit) which made it difficult to progress.

yes, and the Abrahmics have been the fountain head of Renaissance in South Asia. Created a space going civilization. with partition.

Just think of it, so much knowledge was burnt to ashes because these barbarians only knew how to rape, murder and vandalise a temple.

That is the saddest thing that has happened with every society , culture and Nation .
Barbarians running free , looting everything that come in their way .

I hope such acts are never repeated . But anyway , We lack power to stop Barbarians .
Barbarians are always smaller in number but some how dominate the majority .

Nalanda University was first of its kind and enrolled so much students too. If it would not have had been vandalised, it would have been the greatest university across world and may be the 8th wonder too...!!!
