Islam, or any religion for that matter, is essentially a reflection of how the majority practices it. When those who practice Islam change, Islam, as the world and Muslims themselves see it, will also 'change'.
Increasingly, the violent fringe minority is beginning to define Islam for the rest of the world. When Ahmadis continue to be treated as second class citizens in Pakistan, we define Islam as intolerant, disrespectful and a discriminatory faith. When we can't even reform our Blasphemy laws and have to listen to arguments, defending a terrorist who murdered a Governor, from esteemed lawyers who have served as senior judges in Pakistan's judicial system, arguments that a fifth grader could poke holes in, then we define Islam as narrow-minded and intolerant, as a religion that encourages mob rule, murder and repression of speech and thought.
Islam has to change, because Muslims have to change, because Muslims have made Islam what it is today, and what it is today is not something to be proud of.
