anabolic–androgenic steroids (AAS) were synthesized in the 1930s, and are now used therapeutically in medicine to stimulate muscle growth and appetite, induce male puberty and treat chronic wasting conditions, such as cancer and AIDS.

Eugen Sandow (1867 – 1925) who died in 1925 before the age of androgenic steroids synthesis in 1930s looked like this after years of body building exercises and diet regime,

At these contests are they not tested???

They stop taking steroids months before entering into these tournaments, also they need to do only short cycles of steroids or as they call in their code language to be on "juice". Steroids cannot be detected either in blood or piss unless they have been taken in recent days. In bodybuilding one doesn't use steroids before a match to give "maximum performance" like in other sports.

So steroids become untraceable as long as you stop taking them a few months before a test? It may be true but I genuinely don't know enough about them. Is this why authorities in serious sports (weightlifting etc) test the athletes regularly I.e. periodically even well before tournaments?
