Bharat Forge artillery gun in final trials before sale to Indian Army

Why is the government dragging its feet in local procurement ?
I believe trials were successful a year back.
The babus dragging their feet or its the IA ?
IA's top brass and MoD babus have been used to kickbacks from foreign firms since ages...the Bofors scandal being a prime example. Until the arms embargo was put in place, IA conducted tests of the Dhanush, ATAGS and Bharat 52 until failure to kill the projects but all three succeeded and stood their ground, infact exceeding expectations. Only issue was with ATAGS despite having the second highest artillery range of 48km, it weighs 18 tons while the expectation is to bring it under 15tons for the existing support infrastructure to mobilize it

With the recent arms embargo bringing all these artillery systems under it's umbrella, IA & MoD couldn't ask for kickbacks anymore favoring foreign firms

In which way is this gun "advanced"? Also very skeptical that the crew can load 6 70pound shells in 30 seconds and fire them.

Any weapon made by the Indians is automatically considered "advanced." Anything made by the Chinese and Pakistanis are considered "trash." Go figure ...

It is hog wash and they wake up to a 70's designed technology and claim it to be local. Typical indian masala pepperoni.

Poorly written article.

IA is not buying the Bharat 52 based on GHN45/Noricum G5 for which Kalyani owns the IPR.

Kalyani Apart from it's own Bharat 52 is also a developing partner for the ARDE ATAGS. Apart from Kalyani Mahindra Defence Naval System, Tata Power Strategic Engineering Division and public sector unit Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) partnered with ARDE for this purpose

Thanks for clarification the second image shows how poorly it's been cobbled together. I do not have photos when i was deployed with G5/G6; the clay mud etc will be all over the wiring and wheels of how they have put this unit together.

Despite successful trails of the ATAGS from both Tata and Kalyani's prototypes, there aren't any concrete orders from IA yet. I believe Dhanush is what's in the horizon

ATAGS allegedly suffered a Barrel Blast last week,DRDO begins probe into accident

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has begun a thorough investigation into an accident involving an indigenously-developed howitzer gun system in Pokhran in Rajasthan last week, officials said on Thursday.

The accident took place when the howitzer was undergoing firing, they said. The Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) is being developed by the DRDO along with two private-sector defence majors.

“Scientists are probing in detailed into the incident,” DRDO Chairman Dr G Satheesh Reddy told PTI.

The indigenously-developed ATAGS are being billed as one of the best among the ones in its range globally. During its last trials, it had fired at a distance of around 47 km.

The Army requires a sizeable number of ATAGS for deployment along the frontiers with China and Pakistan.

In 2017, the Army received the first batch of two ultra-light howitzers from the US after a 30-year wait for new artillery guns since the induction of Bofors guns in the mid-1980s.

The M-777 A-2 ultra-light howitzers (ULH) have a maximum range of 30 km and manufactured by the BAE Systems.

The Indian Army is in dire need of ULH and India had struck a government-to-government deal with the US in November 2016 for supply of the 145 howitzers at a cost of nearly Rs 5,000 crore.

These barrels are no joke; the metal alloys need to be very specific. Also what kind of shell was being used etc.
