On Tuesday, BDL and MBDA signed a licensing agreement to establish the manufacturing facility. As per the agreement, MBDA will transfer equipment and knowledge to BDL for the facility

The new facility will also have the potential to conduct maintenance, repair and overhaul operations of ASRAAMs.

The facility is expected to commence operations by 2022-23 and work on establishing it will start immediately. The setting up of this facility is being seen as a step in the direction of the central government’s Make in India initiative in the defence sector.

The ASRAAM is one of the within visual range missiles currently available. In the future, BDL will manufacture ASRAAMs at its unit in Telangana’s Bhanur for domestic purpose as well as export through MBDA.

BDL already manufactures many MBDA-designed missiles in India.

The ASRAAM is a within visual range air dominance weapon. It is a new generation close combat missile. Its low drag, aerodynamic airframe, unrivalled speed and manoeuvrability throughout its flight and increased agility make it the best missile in its category of weapons. The missile has full ‘Lock On Before Launch’ and ‘Lock On After Launch’ operating modes.
