It is speculated that the news was published in the Indian media only to cover up the BSF's failure to curb cattle smuggling, BGB said
The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has protested against a report published by The Indian Express implicating BGB in smuggling cattle heads in Bangladesh.
At a press release on Sunday, BGB termed the report and the statement of Indian Border Security Force (BSF) as utterly baseless.
The Indian Express published a report headlined ''BSF: Border Guard Bangladesh supports cattle smuggling'' on July 13.
Citing a Hindi statement signed by BSF South Bengal Frontier DIG SS Guleria on July 6, the report said BSF claimed that BGB is fully supporting cattle smuggling from India.
In its press release, the BGB said the inaction or the lack of action on part of the BSF undoubtedly raises questions when the Indian smugglers gather cattle heads on their soil and smuggle those through waterways along the borders.
For making more profit, the Indian smugglers become very enthusiastic about smuggling cows to Bangladesh which also affects local farmers.
Under the circumstances, the BGB has taken a very strict stand to prevent cattle smuggling.
The border force held public awareness meetings in the border areas with local representatives, administration, police, and distinguished individuals of the society along with people of all walks of life over the issue.
In addition, strict surveillance including BGB patrol along the borders and night surveillance with the help of local people has been stepped up.
It is speculated that the news was published in the Indian media only to cover up the BSF's failure to curb cattle smuggling, the press statement added.
According to The Indian Express report over cattle smuggling, the BSF said the BGB supports the "inhuman, merciless and seditious" activity.
Mentioning the BSF statement, the report said the cattle are blindfolded, and banana stems are tied to them to help them float on the Ganga, so that they can be swept across to Bangladesh.
"When they arrive in Bangladesh, there are hundreds of Bangladeshi cattle smugglers who capture these animals, using their speedboats. This task is sometimes done with the agreement of the Border Guard Bangladesh personnel."
In the meantime, the Bangladesh government declared it will not allow import of cattle for sacrificial animals during the Eid-ul-Azha this year.
According to the Department of Livestock Services, there is a stock of around 11.8 million animals in the current year.
