Bengal proposes world's largest solar power plant

KOLKATA: The West Bengal government's proposal to set up a large solar power plant — billed as the largest in the world — is "under consideration" of the central government, an official said on Wednesday.

According to solar energy expert SP Gonchaudhury, who is also advisor to the state government's power department, "If sanctioned, the power plant planned in Purulia district will generate 250MW of power."

"There is plenty of land in Purulia ... we are scouting locations near an existingwater pumping plantin the Baghmundi area. The detailed project report is under consideration of the ministry of renewable energy," Gonchaudhury said.

"If sanctioned, it will be theworld's largest solar power plantin terms of capacity generation," he said.

Moreover, the unique aspect of the project is that solar energy will be used to pump water during the day, while the water stored in the process will generate electricity during the night when solar energy is not available.

"The entire process will rely on non-conventional energy source, that is, solar and hydro, and will be completely green," he added.

With an estimated cost of Rs.1,700 crore, the venture will top other solar power plants of 150-160MW capacity.

Bengal has rivers, coastal areas with rich alluvial soil,why wouldd anyone build solar park on fertile lands? Even if they have barren land it can be converted to crop produce since rivers are nearby.Unless its a desert like thar with no water source nearby its not feasible to convert land for solar plant, they could use the gujarat canal model where they covered canals by solar panels.

Modi has a major plan of supplying 400 million homes with solar power by 2022.So along with solar,wind and green energy will be utilised to power as much homes as they can.
We can also consider using Tidal wave turbines in sea coast and wind turbines in sea since we have large coastline.

Bengal falls in the zone, which has one of the least potential for solar, among the bigger states, in India. The main hot spots lie in the west, south, central and north west parts of India. The East and NE do not show the same kind of potential. This does not mean they cannot generate solar power, just that they do not have the potential at an industrial level for the same, as compared to the rest of India.
