Mayawati had made more statues of herself in Lucknow than Mahatma Gandhi has in India. Although thankfully Supreme court and opposition interfered and she cannot spend money on any stupid things like these.

Social Engineering at its best. Think of it, 30 years from now a new generation will grow up thinking Mayawati/Bhutto must have been a great leader since she has so much respect that she has 1000's of such portrayals.

Corrupt leaders are everywhere. There should we ways to bind them or they will run away with everything.

Sorry for pointing out but

500 PKR = 277.4 INR

1 billion USD is approx 12 million USD. Although its not astronomical when we think of it from a country point of view, it is enough to turn heads when you want to spend it on statues.

wht mr zardaris emotions are understandable however inwar times this is not going to help the country instead he should use this money on fundamental issues like ROTI , KAPRA and MAKAN

I thought 1000 Million USD is 1 Billion USD :partay:

What i am going to say may hurt alot of you, but thats what i truely feel.

If BB died, she died for herself and her family, she had nothing to do with pakistan, she was a power hungry human being like any of us, if someone dies fighting the enemies of the country he/she must be honoured, now lets suppose BB died not for herself, or her kids or her husband or her party but for the restoration of democracy(which i doubt coz she and her family were dictators in the party, they never let and will never let anyone else lead the party) in pakistan, even then its unethical for anyone to make her monument out of poor people's money.

In my opinion, no one except Quaid-e-Azam(R.U.A) or Allama Iqbal(R.U.A) is worth such an honour, i am against such wasteage of money.

WHY DOESN'T THE **** NAMED ZARDARI USE HIS OWN MONEY FOR THE MONUMENT? INSTEAD HE EATS OFF THE PEOPLE'S DIMISHING MONEY LIKE THE *** HE IS.

Glad i let that out.

While millions of Pakistanis are alredy dying and suffering because of his/and his chums corruptions , this twink Zardari wants to glorify the dead and spend a billion on someone who was also dishonest to core .

Utterly shameful and appalling. :hitwall:

Although I don’t mind giving a billion rupees to someone who is ready to take out this Zardari dude once for all.

Let me know who is collecting !! :smokin:

I wonder if he gets to keep 10% of this 1 billion

let me know who is collecting !! :smokin:

Happy New Year 2010. Cheers!!

A simple garden would have been an ideal tribute to a old prime minister of Pakistan , I do not agree spending 1 billion would be idea solution

We need to make Zardaris monument, And i am sure all pakistanis will happily participate in giving aid in building that monument, if we tell them that "we will build zardari monument after hanging him in front of all, and the same place the monument will be build :)"

Gwadar gala most expensive in country’s history

ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet meeting held on Wednesday on a Navy ship anchored near the Gwadar port is estimated to have cost the nation over Rs5 million, making it the most expensive cabinet meeting in the country’s history.

It was held just 10 days after the government had approved austerity measures to reduce its expenditure.

“This indicates how seriously Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and members of his cabinet take their own decisions and how they are going to give up their elitist lifestyle,” a senior official of the Ministry of Finance told Dawn.

He said the ministry did not know exactly how much had been spent on the cabinet meeting because provincial governments, federal ministries and departments used their own resources for travelling, lodging, boarding and other expenses.

However, he said that according to a safe estimate the meeting must have cost the national exchequer more than Rs5 million in just two days.

About 200 government leaders and officials, including the prime minister and his entourage, federal and provincial ministers and chief ministers and their secretaries and supporting staff, travelled by air from the four provincial capitals and Islamabad to attend the meeting.

Other officials suggest that the expenditure on the joyride was even higher.

The government’s objective to sign a consensus NFC award could have been better served had the meeting been held in Quetta at a much lower cost and higher political benefits.

Interestingly, only a day after the Arabian Sea cabinet meeting, the federal government notified formation of a high-powered committee headed by Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin to ensure implementation of the austerity measures approved by the cabinet on Dec 17.

When contacted, Mr Tarin declined to comment on the austerity measures and expenses incurred on the cabinet meeting held on board PNS Babar. He, however, said that a “strong booster” was required to make the government give up its princely lifestyle and implement the austerity measures.

Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira did not respond to calls and text messages seeking his comments.

Informed sources said that Prime Minister Gilani had flown from the federal capital one day ahead of the meeting on a special C-130 plane, along with more than 80 officials and about two dozen media personnel.

The prime minister’s own team comprised about 10 personal security staff and 12 civil and military secretaries and physicians. A number of other media teams travelled from Karachi and Quetta to cover the signing ceremony of the NFC award and the cabinet meeting.

The chief ministers travelled with equally strong ancillary staff. The federal and provincial finance ministries had brought with them their own teams.

Besides, a large number of officials and personnel of intelligence and security agencies had taken over the entire area much ahead of the cabinet meeting or arrival of the prime minister.

It was for the first time that Gwadar Pearl Continental Hotel had hosted such a large number of guests since its completion a few years ago. The only five-star hotel in Gwadar has 94 rooms all of which had been booked for the prime minister’s entourage.

For some cynics in the government it was sort of a picnic on the shores of Gwadar arranged in the name of a cabinet meeting.

An official of the hotel said that previously only two floors of the hotel were operational, but because of the prime minister’s visit two more floors were opened. The normal rate of a room in the hotel ranges between Rs10,500 and Rs15,000 per day.

Six-course meals were served to guests staying at the hotel and in navy residences, government rest-houses and other hotels around the port.

This was a glaring deviation from one of the austerity measures approved by the cabinet that allows only one dish at lunches and dinners.

An official said that an unfortunate accident took place when a journalist staying close to a high-tension transmission line was seriously injured because of electric shock and he had to be flown to Karachi for treatment.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Gas tariff increased by 18 per cent

ISLAMABAD: An across-the-board increase of 18 per cent in prices of natural gas for all categories of consumers — domestic, industrial, commercial and CNG stations — with immediate effect from Friday was notified by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority on Thursday night.

According to the notification, the increase will yield an additional revenue of about Rs21 billion to the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and Rs11 billion to the Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGCL) during the current fiscal year.

The notification was earlier approved by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.

An increase of about Rs64.02 per million British Thermal Unit (mmbtu) has been allowed in the average sale rate of SNGPL to Rs296 per unit, up by about 18 per cent.

The average sale rate for SSGCL has been allowed to go up by Rs38.06 per mmbtu -- about nine per cent.

The average sale rate for all consumers of natural gas, bought either from SSGC or SNGPL, has been increased by 18 per cent to ensure uniform gas tariff across the country.

SNGPL and SSGCL had a couple of weeks ago sought an average increase in gas prices by about Rs80 per unit and Rs57 per mmbtu, respectively, through separate petitions to Ogra to meet their estimated revenue shortfalls during the current financial year. They said the increase was necessitated by a much

higher cost of gas because of rise in international oil prices and depreciation in the value of rupee against the US dollar.

The cost of domestic gas production is linked to international oil prices that have registered a substantial increase over the past six months.

Added to this is the impact of depreciation of the rupee against dollar because international gas producers are paid in foreign currency for whatever gas they produce from domestic gas fields.

Besides, the government is required under covenants with international lending agencies to ensure a minimum of 17 to 17.5 per cent guaranteed rate of return to SNGPL and SSGCL.

DOMESTIC CONSUMERS

According to the notification, gas rates for the lowest slab (50 cubic metres per month) of domestic consumers have gone up from Rs80.65 to Rs95.01 per mmbtu and that of the second slab (50-100 cubic metres) from Rs84.45 to Rs99.48.

Likewise, rates for the third slab (100-200 cubic metres) have been increased from Rs153.73 to Rs181.10 per unit and that of the fourth slab (200-300 cubic metres) from Rs325.48 to Rs383.42.

Gas rates for fifth slab (300-400 cubic metres) have been increased from Rs423.42 to Rs498.80 per unit, followed by the sixth slab (400-500 per cubic metres) from Rs550.44 to Rs648.43 per unit and the last slab (over 500 cubic metres) from Rs730.17 to Rs860.15.

Rates for non-profit consumers like places of worship, educational institutions and armed forces’ mess, along with tandoors have been increased equal to the first four slabs of domestic consumers.

Gas rates for commercial consumers and ice factories have gone up from Rs393.48 to Rs463.76 per unit.

Rates for industrial consumers and fuel for fertiliser factories have been increased from Rs324.30 to Rs382.37 per unit. Rates for CNG stations have been increased from Rs427.15 to Rs503.64 per unit.

POWER STATIONS

Rates for Wapda’s power stations have gone up from Rs333.98 to Rs394 per unit and that of Liberty Power Project from Rs1060.4 to Rs860.

Gas tariff for independent power producers (IPPs) has gone up from Rs282.88 to Rs332.36 and that of captive power plants (CPPs) from Rs324.30 to Rs382.37.

According to the notification, CNG rates for the Potohar region have been increased from Rs49.73 per kg to Rs55.30 per kg and those for Sindh and Punjab from Rs48.54 per kg to Rs53.63 per kg.
