MK El-Sana: Razing of Bedouins' homes is crime against humanity

Published: 02.16.10, 11:33 / Israel News

MK Talab El-Sana (United Arab List-Ta'al) accused the Israeli government of committing crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing in its treatment of the Bedouin population.

The government "continues to employ the dark policy of the Israel Land Administration by plowing Bedouin crops in the Negev and destroying their homes", El-Sana told a conference on the wellbeing of children in Beersheba. "These acts constitute the pouring of gasoline onto the fire of the Bedouins' anger and frustration, as they have already been systematically discriminated against in all fields for many years," he added. Court Goes After Illegal Bedouin Building

Reported: 19:42 PM - Feb/15/10

(IsraelNN.com) A Be'er Sheva court ruled on Monday that the Abu Basma local council has 12 months to raze 30 luxurious villas that were built by Bedouins without permits and to begin legal steps against 35 other illegal buildings. The decision was handed down in a motion filed by Regavim, an organization which specializes in fighting illegal Arab construction.

The Abu Basma Local Council is made up of the Bedouin communities northeast of Beer Sheva, near the Jewish communities of Meitar and Omer. It was established as part of an attempt to regulate rampant illegal Arab construction in the area, and to prevent further Bedouin encroachment on government land in the Negev. Regavim said that there are hundreds of additional illegal buildings in Abu Basma and that it is considering filing a motion about them as well.
