Well Tea most likely was drank by Chinese , Herbal brew or medicine started off as a treatment for various ailments for stomach

a) Green Tea
b) Dipping the Ginger stock in Hot water for fixing stomach problems with Pepermint leafs

Western British Traders later expanded it across to Europe as an exotic gift to be shared with people of Western world.

It evolved into Sugar/Milk or Creame version by the time it reached British Island

Then we also had arrival of Turkish Coffee / Qahwa etc ~ and modern day coffee

Herbal Tea ~ was part Medicine , part fiction part reality
in world before Anti Biotics and Flu medicine, people only had this warm brew
for fixing ailments and , travelling doctors carried bags of these herbs to share with people
if the saw someone sick , in return for money
