The beauty and grandeur of Pakistan is much stronger than the images of destruction often portrayed through different mediums. The strong statement was the underline message of the exhibition organised by the Pakistan Association of Photograph Journalists (PAPJ), a local imitative of Pakistani photographers, where 187 Pakistani photographers from 17 cities of the country displayed their amazing work at the Rawalpindi Arts Council.

The organisers made it a rule for those who wanted to display their work in the exhibition that any photograph depicting violence or terrorist activity would not make its place for the display. “We have got brilliant work of feature photography that usually gets ignored as the newspaper space is usually occupied by the photographs related to blasts and other such events,” said Abid Zia, Coordinator PAPJ.

A large number of people from all walks of life visited the exhibition of almost 500 feature photographs of photojournalists from big and small cities. For the photography lovers, the exhibition is a golden chance to watch the best feature work by Pakistani photojournalists focusing on faces, scenic beauty and daily life of the county.

The smiling faces and sparkling eyes, the hard work and the struggle, the animals and the birds, the sports and festivals- all made part of the exhibition showing variety of facets that exist but remain unnoticed in rural and urban places of Pakistan. “There are photographs from all sorts of cameras. Even we, the experienced photographers, are amazed by the skill and talent of some young photojournalists from relatively smaller cities. Producing such technically perfect and international standard photographs with the limited technical training and equipment is nothing more than a miracle,” opined Zia. The interesting moments captured by the photographers interests all those who came to appreciate the initiative by PAPJ. “The purpose is to encourage Pakistani photojournalists and providing them with a platform to display their work for the world,” said Zia. “All you can watch here are the feature photographs depicting unlimited and extraordinary talent of genius photographers we have,” said Coordinator PAPJ.

He said that only a few media organizations provide cameras and other related equipment to the photojournalists. “Mostly they buy their own equipment without any insurance and are self motivated to produce extraordinary work,” said Zia. He said that much more can be done to further nurture the abilities and skill of upcoming photojournalists.

Also present on the occasion was Akram Shaid from Hyderabad who got his photograph of a boy, enjoying bath in ‘nullah’ water, qualify for the Reuters calendar. “Such exhibitions are encouragement for new comers as they get to learn a lot about different dimensions of photography by the display of quality work of senior photojournalists,” said Akram. “The three-day exhibition will end today (Monday). Mian Aslam from Jamaat-e-Islami will pick the best three photographs and will give away prizes.”
