LAHORE: Adviser to Chief Minister Khwaja Ahmad Hassaan and Lahore Division Commissioner Abdullah Khan Sumbal on Friday inaugurated a model pushcarts distribution project.

As many as 30 carts were distributed on Friday – 16 among vendors in Fateh Garh Bazaar and 14 in Allama Iqbal Town’s Kareem Block Market.

Addressing the ceremony, Hassaan said that provision of model pushcarts was part of the chief minister’s vision to beautify the city. He said that the project would help ensure sale of hygienic fried and non-fried items. “The scheme will help us achieve the goal of beautifying Lahore,” the adviser said.

Commissioner Sumbal said he hoped that model pushcarts would prove a step in the right direction to beautify the city. “The project will help improve the ‘cart culture’ in Lahore,” the commissioner said.

He said that in the next two months, nearly 150 pushcarts would be provided to vendors in various bazaars. He said the authorities concerned would make sure that items sold on such carts were available at rates fixed by the government. He said a steering committee had been tasked with evaluating the project’s outcome.

In the next phase, the commissioner said, pushcarts would be distributed in collaboration with Akhuwwat that would offer interest-free loans for the purpose.

Earlier, the commissioner’s office had arranged a competition to select seven pushcarts designs keeping in view the price, durability and hygiene parameters.

The University of Engineering and Technology Lahore, the Punjab University, the National College of Arts and the Punjab Small Industries had taken part in the competition.
