BBC: Drug addiction blights the Indian state of Punjab

5 December 2010 Last updated at 02:12 GMT
There is growing concern in India about the rapid rise in drug addiction cases in Punjab, one of the country's wealthiest states.

The main university in the region has claimed that 70% of young Punjabi men are hooked on drugs or alcohol.

The problem is at its worst along the border with Pakistan where heroin originating from Afghanistan is smuggled into the country.

The BBC's Mark Dummett reports from Amritsar.

i am from phagwara punjab drug use is a huge problem i have many friends and relatives who are addicted to smack other opiates and capsules that theyv by from medicine shops it is destroying the youth of the state.

Dont u think actual figures will be 98-99% esp in Malwa region.

. .
It doesn't matter what we think. Do we have any evidence?

Even the media is silent on this.

no matter where it came from the thing is that punjab is in grip of this epidemic.what needs to be done now is to find a solution for it more drug rehabilitation centres need to be opened. The medicine shops that sell capsules and other stuff to anyone need to be shut down.

in alot of places its gonna be alot higher then 70 per cent just counting my freinds its gotta to be about 90 % of them do some drug or another

the article is absoloutely correct...if we talk only about young men, i would say that the figure is even higher what is given here...this is seriously alarming...one of the possible negative effect of having too much of wealth and nawabi lifestyle.

.
The other danger is that most of the users that inject share neddles so we also gonna see a rise in hiv transmission.I once asked my freind who injects and shares needles is he not worried about aids his reply was he drinks a kilo of milk a day eats loads of chicken what can happen to him truly shocking. For a state that once prided itself on the strengh and work ethic of its people im afraid thats gonna be a thing of the past if the centre and state govermant dont take this seriously

.
good money, unemployment, easy availability are main reasons. every day i read abt drugs being caught esp in border areas.

.
and the central government will not do anything until the situation is out of control.

i was born in punjab and i fcking don't care, when Punjab government don't care AT ALL.

hell,,forget the government, PPl in Punjab don't care. they are all just lazy *** ppl. punjab will become UP one day.
