Emphasising on the need to ensure smooth presidential transition, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest on Wednesday said that outgoing US President Barack Obama will remain in office till January 20, 2017. “Barack Obama will be the president till January 20 next year,” Earnest said while addressing the media from the White House. “Donald Trump will have some difficult challenges ahead and that is why a smooth transition is needed,” he added.
He also expressed his surprise at the fact that the same people who voted Barack Obama into power voted for Donald Trump in the elections.
“There are many who voted for Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012, and voted for Donald Trump in 2016. Why I don’t know,” said Earnest.
Earlier, President Barack Obama on Wednesday urged Democrats to put aside their disappointment after Republican Donald Trump won the race to replace him and work toward a successful transition of presidential power.
“We are now all rooting for his success in uniting and leading the country,” Obama said after a bitter campaign where he worked hard on Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton’s behalf to defeat Trump, who has pledged to undo Obama’s top legislative and executive accomplishments.
Earlier, Hillary Clinton graciously accepted her defeat in the US Presidential election, saying she hopes Donald Trump will be a successful President for all Americans and that the “deeply divided” nation owes him “an open mind and the chance to lead.”
