RAWALPINDI:
Hundreds of activists of Hizbut Tehrir, a banned outfit, successfully held a rally outside Liaquat Bagh in Rawalpindi on Sunday. Traffic on Benazir Bhutto Road remained suspended, while numerous Punjab police officials present on the scene did nothing to stop the rally.

The activists called for replacing the present government system in the country with caliphate (an Islamic political system). They raised slogans like “Say no to democracy”, “We welcome Khilafah”, “Kufar nahi Islam chahiey” (We want Islam, not secularism).

Police sources said that lack of coordination and the absence of senior police officials at the scene were the main reasons why police made no attempt to stop the rally. They did, however, arrest two of the more than hundred people participating in the rally.

Talking to The Express Tribune, a police official requesting anonymity said, “It is not easy to arrest members of [Hizbut Tehrir], as they enjoy cordial relations with politicians and high-ups.”

He added that few of the organisation’s members that were recently arrested by the Lahore police were released on Saturday due to pressure from influential politicians.

A statement issued by Hizbut Tehrir after the rally said, “Our members have braved the harshness of the traitor rulers for the sake of Allah and Rasul Allah. We pledge to continue our struggle against the American kuffar (infidels) and their agent rulers until Allah bestows us nasr (help).”

An activist of the organisation, Ahmed, said, “There is no justification to impose ban on our activities, as we are a non-violent and non-militant organisation.”

He said that the government’s ban on the organisation’s activities is unnecessary and needs to be lifted. He said that the organisation holds such activities in other major cities of Punjab province but only receives resistance from the police in Islamabad.

The capital police recently foiled an attempt by Hizbut Tehrir to hold a seminar at the National Press Club in Islamabad. In a press statement, the organisation had termed the police action “a conspiracy against Islam”.
