Video shows China bank employees being spanked

  • From the section China

There are at least four rounds of spanking in the video with one woman (far right) recoiling each time

A video has surfaced online showing staff at a Chinese bank being publicly spanked for poor performance during a training session, sparking outrage.

The video, first posted by the People's Daily, shows a trainer asking eight employees why they did not "exceed themselves" at training.

He then spanks them with what looks like a stick. Reports say he later also cut and shaved their hair.

Two executives at the bank have been suspended.

The incident took place at a training session for more than 200 employees at Changzhi Zhangze Rural Commercial Bank in northern China on Saturday.

The trainer, Jiang Yang, has issued an apology, saying the spanking was "a training model I have tried for years" and had not been instigated by executives at the bank.

'Hair cutting punishment'
The video, which first surfaced on Monday, appears to have been taken by someone in the audience on a smartphone.

Mr Jiang is seen reprimanding eight bank employees on stage, asking them why they received the lowest scores in a training exercise.

The employees give answers including "failing to make a personal breakthrough", "I did not co-operate with colleagues" and "I lacked courage".

Mr Jiang then says "get your butts ready" and proceeds to spank them with what appears to be a thick piece of wood.

It shows at least four rounds of spanking, with one woman recoiling each time, apparently in pain.

At one point, that women places her hands over her behind, but is told to "take your hand off".

The spanking was followed by a "hair cutting punishment", a statement (in Chinese) by the Changzhi local government said.

Chinese media reports said the men had their heads shaved, while the women had their hair cut.

'What sort of logic is this?'
According to the statement, the Shanxi Rural Credit Co-operatives Union, which regulates the bank, has set up a group to investigate the incident.

The bank's chairman and deputy governor had been suspended for "failing to strictly check the content of the course", the regulator said, while the bank would help the employees seek compensation from the training company.

Mr Jiang has issued a video apology, and said the spanking had "nothing to do" with the leaders at the bank. Such rumours "had severely harmed his clients and the leaders" at the bank, he added.

People online have been expressing outrage over the treatment of staff.

"Since when does beating employees become a way of raising performance?" one user asked on Sina Weibo, a Twitter-like microblog used in China.

Another user said he was dissatisfied because he felt Mr Jiang had focused on apologising to the banking executives.

"In his video apology, he kept emphasising that he had hurt the leadership at Changzhi Zhangze Rural Commercial Bank! He spanked the employees, but apologised to the leadership? What sort of logic is this?"

P.S: It seems quite obvious from a Bank training manager doing it on stage that gender neutral punishment even at this stage is quite acceptable in Chinese society, just like we have in our schools for boys.

From my personal experience, Once I traveled to Pakistan just for 3 days after flying almost 3 days one way ( almost 6 day flight in total ) all the way from Hawaii to Islamabad via denver, dubai and then Karachi. Everything was going fine, till I reached Karachi. My connecting flight was from Karachi to Islamabad. There was only 45 min transfer time for my bags to be transferred from Emirates Airline to PIA. It's was almost 8 years since I been to Pakistan and didn't remember the Pakistani way of dealing with people. I went to the person standing at boarding pass counter to try telling him the story. Guy stayed on his 2 personal cell phone while I was standing right in front of his counter. I was courtious not to disturb his phone but he didn't bother to get off his phone and ask me, if he can help me. Long story short, They didn't transfer my bags from emirates to PIA on time. I came back to Pakistan after 8 years. End Up staying in same dress all the time and couldn't give any bag load of gifts or items to my relatives who I was meeting after 8 years. Now I feel certain societies deserve certain treatment.

Overseas Pakistan's do you relate any such incident.

Question: Corporal punishment is a common practice in Pakistani schools and society in general for boys -only/mostly- . Do you think instituting Chinese style gender neutral punishment even after school days would improve overall productive of Pakistani society?

If I was the op, I would also be angry. Just imagine not having your luggage with you and especially on your first trip in 8 years.
I am still pissed to this day even after almost 5 years.

Every religion and ideology got extremists, this in my opinion is the extreme of Confucian.

However, I wont mind if Ishaq Dar and co attend this course.

During my trips, all personnel I came across at airports did their jobs effectively and courteously, actually. Politeness works wonders, really.

If all Pakistani finance minister went through this course then Pakistani would be loaning money to IMF right. Chinese wants results. Race, religion, gender all comes later.

I was way too polite I guess, for not to disturb his 45 min multiple phone calls. I guess age factor matters a lot in Pakistan. I barely hit my early 20's back then.

Asking for attention, but politely, is the way to start such interactions. I have never failed to get any sort of help or assistance needed if I asked politely. Pakistanis generally go to great lengths help anyone who asks them, no matter what their role. I will give you an example. Say if you wanted to rejoin traffic from a parking spot. Trying to force your way into traffic will lead to people not letting you in. A small and polite request to the correct driver and they will literally block other traffic for you to get in. Really. Try it some time. :D

Absolutely ridiculous man-age-ment. Humiliation like that never helps rather it turns the employees revengeful.
