Bangladeshis in India fear deportation, spike in border smuggling
Bangladeshis living in India say a 'growing climate of hostility' is forcing them to return to their homeland.

10 Feb 2020

Bangladeshis living in India say the passage of India's controversial citizenship law and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC) has created a "growing climate of hostility" towards Muslims, causing an increase in the smuggling of people along the India-Bangladesh border.

In December, the Indian parliament passed the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) to grant nationality to "persecuted" minorities from three neighbouring Muslim-majority countries: Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Deemed anti-Muslim by critics for making religion a marker of citizenship in an officially secular country, the anger over the CAA and fears over the NRC have triggered protests across India, which have seen an unprecedented participation of Indian Muslims.

Meanwhile, Bangladeshi Muslims, with some living in India for decades, told Al Jazeera that the recent developments have generated "hostility" against them and has forced them to flee the country, often with the help of smugglers.

Those fleeing fear that if they do not leave, the Indian government will send them to various detention centres operating in the Indian state of Assam and in other parts of the country.

Forced to flee
Reporting from the Bangladesh side of the 4,000 kilometre (2,500 mile) border the two countries share, Al Jazeera's Bernard Smith said smuggling of people has suddenly become a booming business.

Smith reported an influx of people along the border in recent months, with most traffic going in one direction - from India to Bangladesh.

"It is impossible to say exactly how many people are illegally crossing the border from India into Bangladesh," he said, adding that the border force has arrested at least 500 people in the last couple of months.

"Smugglers tell us they are crossing 40-60 people every night," he said.

Munir Hawoldar, a recent returnee in his late 20s, told Al Jazeera he had been living in India since he was an infant.

"They have been cracking down and there have been arrests. Sixty people from our community were detained. We haven't heard from them. This caused panic and we decided to leave for Bangladesh," he said.

Flashing what she said was an Indian work permit, Kuki Begum said she had been living in India with her husband for 11 years.

"It is absolutely clear India's ruling party doesn't want any Bangladeshi anymore," she said. "What can we do? We have to live with our dignity and honor, so we came back."

Last month, hundreds of people were rendered homeless after Indian authorities demolished a slum in Bengaluru city over rumours it was inhabited by Bangladeshis. It later turned out that all the slum residents were Indian citizens.

According to the Indian government, some two million Bangladeshis live in India.

Last month, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said in an interview she "did not understand" why the Indian government passed the CAA, adding that "it was not necessary".

Bangladesh is already struggling to cope with 1.2 million Rohingya refugees from Myanmar who fled what the United Nations calls a genocide that took place in 2017.

Don't let them in. They are not bangladeshis but poor Indian Muslims

and they will be let in by BD. We are working this out with the "wife".

Let’s say what the smuggler said 40-60 people are returning not push in though it seems it is the case by bringing supposed illegal Bangladeshi by train to Kolkata and then threatening them to cross or get arrested and worse can happen to them.

Even if we go by 40-60 figure it comes below 5000 number. So where are the so called 20 million illegal Bangladeshi Muslims? It’s possible there may be some Bangladeshi in Southern India or Delhi but saying it 20 million is nothing but nonsense. This is not even millions.

Indian media makes it a sensational news. The story of Aljazeera originally posted in an Indian media if I am not mistaken. I won’t be surprised if Indians working in Alhazeera has done some inside job to post this bogus news. Only a handful returnee does not make it 20 million propaganda!

Breaking news: Al Jazeera's Bernard Smith has interviewed every single smuggler in every sector of the border to compile his number of "40 - 60 every night"

He also confirms this is established to be a purely linear trend and not exponential or ramp...from his one small corner of reporting "business booming in smuggling illegals back to where they came from (BD)"

This is not even India but some supposed smuggler whom this Al Jazeera journalist supposedly asked when BSF is patrolling nearby. Probably some Sanghi putting these propaganda.

Let me put it this way. Since the Rohingyas issue started 50,000 refugees crosses border from Bangladesh to India in just 3 years 2012-15. No idea what were the BGB doing then.

So just imagine the number of people into India for a good part for last 3 decades. With free rations, free school, meal etc why wouldn't they want to jump in. Good now it's happening. More fear mongering should make 1000 passes a day. BGB should learn what's the tough part of infiltration

The problem and number of Bangladeshi illegal immigrants has increased many folds... as third and forth generations are living with complete documents...

Most Rohingyas migrated to India via Myanmar not Bangladesh. So far in total around 41000 Rohingya refugees are in India. It’s BSF’s duty to stop them not the other way around. Ask BSF how much they have got in exchange of letting them in.

Most are Hindus which your BJP has encouraged to come and are ready to embrace!

Nope. Most Rohingyas migrated from Bangladesh. 90% of then.

"
The majority of India's Rohingya came to India either prior to 2012 or following that year's violence in Myanmar - all well before the 2017 genocide. At the time, Bangladesh was much less welcoming to refugees, but India appeared to offer great promise.

"Most of us went to Bangladesh first, but with little or very bad work, and the government didn't support us like it supports the refugees who are there now," one Rohingya refugee, who had been residing in India for over five years told me. "People were saying that in India, there were better economic opportunities - real jobs for us."

Most of the Rohingyas use BD as a launchpad to go to other countries. The terrain is easy helped by Burma army. The terrain is unforgiving in India Myanmar border. 40k is the number primarily covered in Jammu, Delhi etc. There are significant numbers in Chennai and Hyderabad as well but authorities aren't giving an number to not Stoke fears against the community.
I couldn't find the video in Parliament when then union minister was saying most of the documented refugees came from BD.

Even if some went to India based on wrong information reality is said by the same refugee below:

Unfortunately for many, upon arrival, those opportunities proved largely illusory.

India is not a land of milk and honey. Vast majority of the Indian’s living standard is below Bangladesh. No sane Bangladeshi will think of migrating to India.

Bottom line is these refugees or Bangladeshis did not go to poor region like Assam or West Bengal which BJP and other extreme Hindu parties are trying to claim where majority of the Bangladeshis are located.

Another thing this is BSF’s responsibility to stop these people from entering not BGBs. I am sure BSF took kickbacks in exchange of let them in.

Who gives a rat's *** about this Hinduvta crap!

BD will remain resolute and only allow back actual BD'shis.

Normal for their to be some illegal immigrants in bordering countries and BGB regularly sends back illegal Indians.

Let India prove illegal BD'shis and they will be happily taken back.
