This is nothing theatrical. These students of SUST are only re-enacting, in protest, the humiliation meted out recently to a Narayanganj school headmaster in public by a local MP and his cohorts.

These video grabs show local lawmaker instructing headmaster Shyamal Kanti Bhakta of Piyar Sattar Latif High School in Narayanganj to do sit-ups holding his ears and seeking pardon in public on Friday. The video was posted on YouTube by narayanganj24.com

Star Online Report

Authorities of a Narayanganj school today suspended its headmaster days after he was publicly humiliated in presence of local lawmaker for his alleged derogatory comments on religion.

Principal Shyamal Kanti Bhakta of Piyar Sattar Latif High School in Narayanganj Bandar Upazila confirmed The Daily Star that he had received a letter signed by the chairman of the school managing committee Farukul Islam in this regard.

“I received the letter this noon which said I have been suspended,” the headmaster told our Narayanganj correspondent this afternoon.

The letter cited physical torture on students, receiving money in the name of teachers’ appointment, derogatory comments on Islam and enjoying leave without permission and being late to office as reasons for the suspension.

The Daily Star received a copy of the letter.

The decision was taken on Friday, according to the letter, which was signed by the chairman of school managing committee yesterday.

The letter states that such allegations were brought against Bhakta several times earlier and that he was warned many times.

WHAT HAPPENED

On Friday, the headmaster was beaten up by a mob and made to do sit-ups holding his ears in the presence of local Jatiya Party lawmaker AKM Selim Osman.

He said some members of the school managing committee had a grudge against him as he refused to meet their unfair demands.

"They wanted me to be their puppet but I resisted them. They had been looking for an excuse to oust me from the school,” he alleged.

Bhakta said they finally got the chance through an incident on May 8 when he slapped two class-X students at the school to discipline them.

Four days later, the chairman of the school managing committee asked him to arrange a meeting to discuss the school's development work, said the headmaster.

Bhakta then called a meeting and went to the school to attend it on May 13.

As the meeting started, a committee member said a female guardian had lodged a written complaint against Bhakta that he had beaten her son, a class-X student of the school.

Within minutes, several youths suddenly entered the meeting room and started beating Bhakta.

The headmaster told this correspondent that he later learnt from his relatives that when he was under attack, it was announced over the loudspeakers of a nearby mosque that he had hurt religious sentiment.

Later, he was made to do sit-ups in the presence of the JP lawmaker.

“I was dumbfounded by the incident. I lost sense of what was happening around me... I want justice. I pray that no teacher would ever go through such an ordeal.”

Bhakta said he didn't say anything about religion, let alone make derogatory remarks.

The video clip showed that the mob encircling Bhakta was chanting “Joy Bangla” while he was doing sit-ups.

At one stage, Bhakta fell to the ground. He was then made to stand up and apologise to the crowd.

According to the victim, the locals were provoked by false allegations that he had made disparaging statements about religion.

Bhakta, a member of the Hindu community, was rescued by law enforcers. He is now receiving treatment at a local hospital under police protection.

Bangladesh government should write a letter to the Indian government stating that they are unable to bear the heavy burden of the farce called 'secularism' that is present in their constitution for decorative purposes, and appeal to India to give shelter to rest of the remaining minorities in Bangladesh. We are unofficially doing it for decades, we will offer our help again. Just for the sake of fairness Bangladesh should give the new refugees proportionate land to settle. This will be far better than perpetually torturing the minorities of Bangladesh and forcing them to live in constant fear.

Must say, Bangladesh is getting rid of their minorities for last seven decades with amazing efficiency, from 1/3rd of the population to a mere 5%-6% now, commendable stuff.

Non-Muslims can never be equal in Muslim countries, not even in Bangladesh, the most secular of Muslim countries.

Bangladesh was never a secular Muslim country, they just successfully fooled the world to believe that.

To begin with, how East Pakistan / Bangladesh came into existence as a separate country? So whatever is happening there with the minorities is totally expected, and in line with their idea of nationalism. The "Bangla" part of Bangladesh is just an afterthought when they failed to live with West Pakistan.

It does seem that way. Bangladesh is officially called the People's Republic of Bangladesh. It's not an Islamic republic but the state religion is Islam. It's a strange hybrid. I have family there and have visited it multiple times since the 1980s, and I must tell you that it's becoming more Islamic with each visit.

In Bengali it's called "Sonar Pathorbati", or "Golden stone bowl", making people wonder whether the bowl is made of gold or stone.

10 secular idiots standing in a line

Young kids...soon they will be brainwashed, just give them some time.

Please dont make dumb comments. East Pakistan was supposed to be mostly joined together mostly Bengal and NE. And East Pakistan, the name isnt important but an entity whatever the name could be. It was supposed to be separate entity but came to a federation considering other independent areas of present India and Pakistan, that is why only two nations were born. Fortunately or unfortunately these areas will be Mulsim dominated but it will be secular. Many Mullahs opposed creation of Pakistan and worked for India. That is why Jamaat i Islami is historically cut short from BD. But after creation of Pakistan these Islamic constitutions were adopted discretely by pressure of moududis. But BD had nothing to do with that whatever happened in that short period. Everyone can see Bangladeshis started uprising in favor of Bangla language shortly after creation of Pakistan. Then same rule can be applied to India also as fortunately or unfortunately its Hindu dominated country so its Hindu country. Secularism was just a deception to get the Mullahs in the bucket. Infact Indian national emblem adopted a Hindu Mantra, and its national anthem is composed to please British gods and the national song is composed to worship India mother, these must be conflicting ideology of minorities.

This teacher on record admitted that he used corporal punishment on that student. I would not mind him squating for that at least.
