Does anyone know why gears have never been introduced on to cycle rickshaws?

Would make the lives of these guys so much easier ... and would barely jack up the price of the rickshaw too much.

A rear derailleur and a 7 speed freewheel would cost 1500 bucks tops (less for direct vendor bulk purchases by the manufacturer) and a rudimentary shifter and shift cable would cost max another 500 bucks.

So in under 2000 bucks we could make a world of difference to their hardship.

The only thing I'm guessing is that the crank and sprockets in rickshaws are heavy gauge hardened steel to take the loads, unlike the much lighter gauge equivalent for ordinary cycles. But its a thought ...

And Taiwan made Shimano too.

Interesting you mention shimano...I have some decent fishing rods+reels of their make...makes sense tho...the concept/materials (for reels and bike gears etc) are quite similar.
