Sticking to what he had said earlier despite strong criticism, Narendra Modi today reiterated that infiltrators from Bangladesh would have to go back and claimed that Mamata Banerjee had said the same thing back in 2005.

Modi said that he would only try to honour the Supreme Court's observation that infiltration was as an act of aggression against India.

"The Supreme Court has said that infiltration is aggression on India. I have no hesitation in giving respect to what the Supreme Court has said," Modi said at an election rally here.

"What the Supreme Court said has to be implemented," Modi reiterated.

The BJP's prime ministerial candidate, however, then hastened to add that the case of refugees from Bangladesh was different and that it was the responsibility of all the states of India to rehabilitate them.

"There are two types of people who have come in -- infiltrators and refugees. Those who are refugees are our family. It is the responsibility of all of India, whether Gujarat or Rajasthan to rehabilitate them with all respect."

He claimed that in August 2005, during UPA I, the Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee had "thrown a shawl at the chair of the speaker demanding that Bangladeshi infiltrators be thrown out."

"You (Banerjee) had then said that Bangladeshi infiltrators have destroyed Bengal and that they were being brought in by the Left for votes," Modi said.

"What Modi is saying today was said by you in 2005," he pointed out.

The Gujarat chief minister said that on May 6, 1997, the then Union Home Minister Indrajit Gupta of the CPI had said in parliament that over one crore Bangladeshi infiltrators had crossed over to India.

Modi also referred to former Union Minister of State for Home P M Sayeed saying in 1995 that Bangladeshi infiltrators were crossing over in large numbers.

He also referred to former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee expressing concern over a rise in the number of Madrasas in areas bordering Bangladesh.

"There should not be any compromise on the issue of country's security and unity," Modi asserted in the meeting in favour of Satyabrata Mukherjee who is contesting from the Krishnagar seat.

He claimed that "while the people here don't get jobs, those who infiltrate from Bangladesh are welcomed with red carpet."

Modi also took up the issue of the Matua community, which comprise a large chunk of the scheduled caste community in Nadia, within which the Krishnagar seat lies, and North 24-Parganas district, saying that he would personally hear their problems regarding citizenship issues and ensure a solution.

She is a politician without principle just like the rest. She, today as a CM does the same thing what the CPI M use to do before. No wonder she is scared by the overwhelming popularity of Modi in the last few months in Bengal.

True that. The positive thing however is that she does view the Bangladeshi immigrants as a threat and I wouldn't be surprised if she has taken measures behind closed doors to ensure more don't hop into India.

Nope. First, she is now the CM and she needs to create her own votebank, and apart from the votebank, the huge black money associated with the cross border smuggling is a lucrative source of income for the politicians and political parties, along with the BSF and police.

Second, India-Bangladesh border is the most ridiculous one on this planet, the border was drawn in such a haste that it passes through the villages and homes in many places, we have many such reports with photos in local media showing the international border passing through someone's bedroom or toilet dividing the house in two parts. In fact people of both sides own land in the other country, and they crossover everyday to cultivate their lands, BSF counts the people and cattle going in and out everyday for cultivation and again recheck when they return (in some places).

Only a continuous border fence without any gap, preferably electrified, is the solution for this problem, you cannot simply guard such a border through patrolling only. Wherever required, we have to rehabilitate people whose homes would be demolished to erect the fence.

Third, after personally talking to people from the border areas I came to know that most of the border shooting happens due to 'mis-communication', yes, smugglers and human traffickers have understanding with the BSF (for money of course) and there are fixed rates for smuggling of different items and human trafficking, problem arise when there is some sudden inspection by senior officials or when some senior officer is visiting, in most cases BSF inform the smugglers and human traffickers in advance, but sometimes they fail to do so or the message doesn't reach to the smugglers and human traffickers on time, and then BSF shoots to save their jobs. Apart form the illegal immigration, we lose crores of rupees every year because of the tax evasion through smuggling, even loaded trucks cross the border by paying a fraction of the legitimate taxes to BSF as bribe.

We need to transfer BSF postings in every 3 months, so that they can't develop the nexus, better if we post BSF personnel who don't know Bengali & Hindi, that will be an added barrier. We have to increase sudden inspections, we should also install surveillance cameras with direct feed to BSF headquarters to monitor the BSF itself.

We have to stop the menace right at the border, because once they are inside the country, it becomes like finding a needle in the haystack.

Would fencing the entire border be a good solution?

If Modi sticks to his word. He will do great service to the nation.

Bangladesh needs a lot of nasbandi specialists.

These Bengali leftist intellectuals need to be gagged permanently.
