A Bangladeshi cleaner in Saudi Arabia was gifted a gold set after he was ridiculed online when photos of him staring at a jewelry shop display went viral. But presents, including smart phones and rice bags, are still pouring in.

Abdullah Al-Qahtani, a Saudi national who spoke to Al Arabiya News Channel, from the gold market in Riyadh, the country’s capital, said he, managed to find the cleaner to give him his gifts.

The cleaner’s was identified as Nuzroul Abdulkareem, and his monthly salary was $187 (700 Saudi riyal).

“More money is being sent to Nuzroul,” Qahtani said, without specifying how much. In addition to bags of rice and honey, Abdulkareem has so far received “two-way tickets to his home country, and two phones - one iPhone 7 and one Samsung Galaxy.”

The story began when a social media user mocked the cleaner by sharing the picture, writing “this man deserves to only look at rubbish.”

Saudis on the social media platform tweeted, vowing to send more gifts to the cleaner, including one user who said a gift of $533 (2,000 Saudi riyal) would be given.

“I am very thankful,” Abdulkareem said.

Qahtani described him as “very hardworking.” “Abdulkareem also takes care of homeless kittens on the street where he works,” Qahtani said.

Another user responded, requesting the cleaner’s information so he could gift him a gold set.

The picture went viral and many Saudi users insisted on buying the cleaner a set.

An account then published photographs of the cleaner holding the gold.

Saudis on the social media promised to send more gifts to the cleaner Turki al-Dajam
(CNN) — A cleaner in the capital of Saudi Arabia was given a set of gold jewels and promised thousands of riyals after he was ridiculed on social media when a photo of him staring at a jewelry shop display went viral.

An Instagram user had mocked the cleaner, who is from Bangladesh but works in Riyadh, by posting the photo with a caption that read "he looks as though he is seeing trash".

The comment promped an outpouring of support for the cleaner on social media, and Abdullah al Qahtani, the owner of the Twitter account Ensaniyat (humanitarianism), started a campaign to find the man in the photo.

"I received tons of phone calls and messages in response to my tweet. Some were really helpful, while others were claiming that they were the cleaner," al Qahtani said.

"But three hours [after] my tweet, which was shared over 6,000 times, we found him," the 38-year-old businessman told CNN over the phone.

Twitter users were able to identify the location of the cleaner, Nazer al-Islam Abdul Karim, from the reflection of the shop glass visible in the photo.

When al Qahtani posted a new photo of Abdul Karim, people began asking for a way to get in touch him.

"Some wanted to donate gold sets, others cash, iPhones and Samsung Galaxy phones," al Qahtani said. "Even a rice company wanted to donate rice bags to Nazer al-Islam."

Turki al-Dajam, an executive at a Saudi sports channel, posted videos on Snapchat showing Abdul Karim choosing a gold set. He also posted photos of the cleaner with his new gifts.

Abdul Karim, who is 65, told CNN that he was delighted with the gifts. Describing the moment the photo was taken, he said: "I saw a flash. I didn't know what this was. Then I heard that my photo was in the media."

"I was just doing my job as a cleaner in the municipality and found myself in front of the gold shop. I am very happy about the gifts and very thankful."

Al Qahtani -- who set up the Ensanyat Twitter account to connect social media users with people in need across Riyadh -- said it was very endearing to see the amount of solitary from people in Saudi Arabia, but also across the Gulf region.

"I really wish we can always stay united like this to help people in need," he told CNN.

He hit the jackpot. At least social media is useful for once.

He was looking with curiousity at the intricate designs and patterns of the Jewellery set

What is wrong in that

Good Job and those retards should be arrested for mocking this man. They need treatment may be electric shocks

1 social media user (a young guy) made this comment "An Instagram user had mocked the cleaner, who is from Bangladesh but works in Riyadh, by posting the photo with a caption that read "he looks as though he is seeing trash".

And in return 6000 people did what they did and quite a few did more than just that obviously.

All in all there can only be positives taken from this story.

They are not plural. Only 1 Twitter user and what he said was bad but nothing absolutely outrageous considering his age and the internet jargon. Many people across the world say much worse things. Just on PDF, lol. The reaction however was fantastic.

Also hopefully this also gives Bangladeshis (and others) who mock their own poor something to think about if natives do something similar to poor people based in Bangladesh which some undoubtedly do as they do in all countries. If foreigners in a foreign land can mobilize this way there is no excuse for locals to do similar things.

.
Don't know what to tell first mock a poor person neglecting his support to the society then pouring him with costly gift. Social media this days doing everything.

Please read the entire thread and specifically post 5. There was only one young Twitter user who made that silly/unnecessary/dumb comment which prompted 6000 users to show sympathy to the man and most of those tried to find out about his identity so they could contact him. Once his identity was discovered he was showered with gifts from complete strangers. A foreigner.

He himself had no idea about that guy who took the photo and made the comment so it was totally unexpected.

This is actually a good story. It for sure outweighs the actions of that 1 young guy.

Anyway this has nothing to do with the topic at hand but I have noticed that many users on PDF and on social media in general only tend to read the headlines and not the full articles before commenting.:)

Mixed feelings about this. He should thank the people for their concern and tell them that i work for my money and dont need any pity or aid.

Arabians/Arabs are world famous for their generosity. This is completely normal in our culture. You do not refuse gifts, food, an invitation to ones home etc. it is considered very rude. For many not used to this it can appear "fake" and "exaggerated" but it is not. It is treated as something normal.
People, mostly youth, just happened to show solidarity with a complete strange, foreigner at that too, who they believed was treated unfairly by 1 person on Twitter. A person that did not even know about this to begin with. I struggle to see how this can be negative. The cleaner received the gifts with happiness and surprise. Nobody forces him to accept them. If he does not want them he should donate them to the poor and needy.

Also similar things have been done to locals, Arabs and other expats alike.

Almost 200 dollars a month for cleaning a street (not the most difficult job) is still many times more than what millions of cleaners receive in Pakistan let alone Bangladesh. Especially that age and if working part-time which I suspect this gentleman of doing if his wage is correct.
If you do not have anything useful to say find another thread to troll in. If it was not the case he would not be in KSA. In fact I don't even know if a 65 year old cleaner is even able to get such a job in Bangladesh given the competition + accommodation and basic necessities etc.

It is not a small sum for the job that he is doing if he works part-time which he likely does. Nor is it a small sum for him. If that was the case he would find something better or not work in KSA at all. Local cleaners (the few that are doing this kind of job) don't earn a lot either. Nowhere do street cleaners earn a lot compared to most other jobs as far as I am aware of.

There is no heat in KSA currently. It snowed heavily a few days ago. "Worst heat" is only relevant 3 months a year and that only during the middle of the day where anybody works to begin with. Can't you see what he is wearing? It is not any warmer than in Pakistan/Bangladesh during the summer. Much less humidity as well.

Just be happy that KSA/GCC Is even willing to host millions of people from South Asia when they could easily have chosen more fellow Arabs or other people. In fact many of us rather want to help fellow poor Arabs than ungrateful people. I know that I would prefer this.

Millions of Horn of Africans alone are absolutely desperate to reach the GCC. Even in war-torn Yemen there have been 100.000 of them who have migrated to Yemen this year so far in the middle of war in order to reach the GCC.

http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/11/horn-africa-refugees-flock-yemen-war-161129174359721.html

KSA is hosting 1-2 million illegal migrants currently from all across the world. It's a big problem.

As I wrote, you have nothing useful to say so find another thread to troll in. Can't be this hard to understand?

So you're in favor of bringing in Arabs to do work in sweltering heat, in constant danger of heat stroke and lung diseases while not being able to return home because their employers took their passports? :what: That's what those laborers are doing, just so you know.
