DHAKA, April 20, 2014 (BSS) - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said Bangladesh sets an example on disaster preparedness and management in the world.

The UN secretary general made the remake to the high-level briefing to member states on the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction at UN headquarters on Wednesday, according to a message received here today.

Moon said Bangladesh is the most populated country in the world in terms of population density where 135 million of people have been affected by natural disasters in last 20 years.

Highly lauded the Bangladesh government efforts in taking disaster preparedness, the secretary general said Bangladesh imparted disaster preparedness training to 62,000 people at rural level and keep 25,000 community volunteers standby to act promptly just after any disaster. This initiative can be followed by other disaster prone countries, he added.

Ban Ki-moon said "We have three major goals for the year 2015. We are striving to meet the Millennium Development Goals. We are shaping a vision for the post-2015 development agenda and we are paving the way for the adoption of a universal legal agreement on climate change.

He said these three objectives are interlinked and they are also closely tied to the global disaster risk reduction framework, he said.

Attending the briefing Permanent Representative of Bangladesh Mission to the UN Dr AK Abdul Momen said people of Bangladesh live by fighting with risk of climate change. "The reorganization of the United Nation authority will inspires them to continue the fight," he said.

He described the Bangladesh government's efforts in acting promptly after any natural calamities or other accidents.
