DHAKA: Bangladesh this time is lagging behind India and Pakistan in the human development ratings by a UN agency, although the country did better in some important sectors, such as gender parity and reduction in child mortality.

Bangladesh’s position in the Human Development Index (HDI) conducted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is 146 among 187 countries.

UNDP country director in Bangladesh Stefan Priesner unveiled with the report at a city hotel Thursday. Earlier on November 2, the report was globally published from Copenhagen by UNDP administrators Helen Clark and Helle Thorning-Schmidt.

Among the regional countries, India and Pakistan stood above Bangladesh on the index this year, but Nepal’s position was below.

South Asian average development index is 5.4 and Bangladesh’s came down below the average to stand at 5.0.

This year, however, Bangladesh has shown improvements specially in removing gender discrimination. Death rate of newborns has also decreased. “In these cases, Bangladesh has improved 25 per cent,” the report says.

The United Nations development agency foresees a better position of Bangladesh next year as a result advances in different sectors.
