DHAKA — Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that her government does not want war with its neighbors amid repeated violations of the international border and airspace by Myanmar’s junta in recent weeks.

“People became refugees after the Russia-Ukraine war broke out. Many became refugees after the Arab Spring. Many Palestinians cannot get access to study and meals. See the situation in Afghanistan. That’s why our call is, we do not want war, we want peace,” she told the media at her Gonobhaban residence in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Ministry summoned Myanmar’s envoy in Dhaka three times and expressed deep concern over mortar shells falling on its territory, indiscriminate aerial firing and airspace violations.

Hasina was asked what assurances she received from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during her September 5-8 visit to India.
She said the Indian government stressed that the ongoing Rohingya refugee crisis had to be addressed.

“It’s true we have sheltered them on humanitarian grounds but, the way it is going, it is becoming a burden. They are humans and we cannot throw them out,” Hasina told the press conference.

Rohingyas refugees deplete natural resources and forests and organize drug and weapons trafficking, she said. “We are trying to maintain law and order as much as possible.”

Abduction, killing, rape, shootings, drug dealing and other crimes are rife at the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar district where over 1 million refugees are sheltered.

Cox’s Bazar police reported that 2,363 cases were filed against 4,979 Rohingyas between August 2017 and July 2022.

Of the cases, 1,601 were filed against 2,207 people for drug possession while 95 murder cases were filed against 431 suspects, 84 rape or attempted rape allegations against 124 people and there were 39 cases filed against 191 people on charges of abduction.

The police said by August they had arrested 1,846 people for 1,470 cases involving the seizure of at least 14 million yaba or methamphetamine tablets.

In five years, at least 386 people were arrested in 190 arms-related cases while 239 firearms, 996 bullets and 12 magazines were seized.

“India always thinks that the Rohingya crisis should be resolved … We sought their assistance and got a positive response. But the problem is with the Myanmar government. It does not care about any pressure. And it is also having its internal fighting. That’s a big problem.”

BD people when led by the BAL party are weak and meek. You guys can see it in the 1971 war. Most of our fighters consisted of our military men of the PA and National Awami Party guys.

It seems America wants to force BD to fight MM that will help the Arakan Army.

Amid the tension over shelling from Myanmar along Bandarban border, home minister Asaduzzaman Khan has said Bangladesh does not want a war with Myanmar and the country wants to solve problems through talks and if need be, it may go to the United Nations.

Asaduzzaman Khan made the remarks while speaking to newspersons after a programme organised by Dhaka Ahsania Mission in capital on Saturday.

Intermittent firing has been taking place between Myanmar’s armed group Arakan Army and the country’s security forces in Rakhine state on the other side of Ghumdhum border in Bandarban’s Naikhyangchhari for over a month. Noise of firing was heard from this side of the border as of Saturday afternoon.

A mortar shell fired from the top of a hill in Rakhine state fell on zero line opposite of Tombru border on Friday, killing a Rohingya child and injuring five others.

Replying to queries from journalists on the situation on the border after Saturday’s programme, the home minister said, “Artillery has landed in our territory and we have strongly protested it. Talks are on with them and we have made our stance clear. Our prime minister never wants a war; we want peaceful solution.

Their internal conflict should remain within their border. We have always protested anything beyond that.”

“Some 1.2 million Rohingyas have taken shelter here and we want them to be repatriated peacefully and we are trying for this,” he added.
Citing problems of various ethnic minority groups in Myanmar, Asaduzzaman Khan said, “Recently, we have seen battle continuing in Myanmar not only with Rohingyas but also with many ethnic minorities. Battle is on along the Thailand, China, India’s Mizoram borders as well as our border.”

“We have noticed Myanmar forces fighting with rebel group Arakan Army. We see sometimes their relations is good or sometimes it turns into a war-like situation. They know what the mystery is and their war should stay within their territory,” he added.

Have you ever investigated why Burma is shelling inside our border? It is because the AA guerrillas already have bases inside Bandarban and the Burmese military aircraft are shelling them that have killed our own people.

Now, MM has stopped sending aircraft missions after military officers from 24 Western countries had their meeting in the same Bandarban/ Ukhiya. But, why the meeting and why it is in Ukhiya?

Can the MM junta obliterate the rebels in all the states where non-Bamaras are in majority even if China sends arms to the Junta? Rebels have sanctuaries in Thailand and BD. MM also has a border with Laos where its NE rebels will find sympathizers.

Anyway, America and India both do not want China to enter Sittwe Port as an entry point to the BoB. Andaman-Nicobar will be at stake in terms of the prospect of naval warfare.

It is bad for all Asian countries, especially in the east, if Sittwe has a Chinese naval base.

BD military is a full time UN mercenary force. We don't have the equipments, leadership and maybe training too...

She is opting to avoid war because she has no other option. I would have appreciated her stance if she made Bangladesh armed forced capable to wage war yet restraining for some pragmatic reasons. But this is not the case. She is not talking from a position of strength but helplessness. This is why, her 'peace angel' posture is so pathetic.
