After much deliberation, the Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council on Wednesday dropped the idea of hosting the second phase of this year’s event in Bangladesh and made it clear that seven cities — Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kochi, Cuttack, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Ranchi — are in line to host matches from May 1 to 13.

The Governing Council also released the fixtures for the first phase, scheduled to take place in the United Arab Emirates. Contrary to the earlier decision, it was decided that 20 matches will be conducted in the three venues in the UAE — Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah — on April 16-30, and not 16 matches. Defending champions Mumbai Indians will take on Kolkata Knight Riders in the opening match.

The Council, which met here, discussed the possibility of hosting the matches in India and later after discussions with the franchises decided that a greater part of the cash-rich league will indeed be held in home venues.

The IPL has been refused security by the government as its schedule clashed with the elections, scheduled to be held from April 7 to May 12.

“Following discussions with the Ministry of Home Affairs, many State governments have indicated that IPL matches can be held in their states and their respective associations came forward to conduct the matches. So, we have decided to host the second phase of matches in India,” BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said after the meeting, which was chaired by board president N Srinivasan.

Though Bangladesh was earlier named as a possible venue for the second phase of the league, it is learnt that the franchises were not eager to play there as it would further complicate logistical issues.

“Shifting the second phase to Bangladesh does make a difference in terms of expenses. It will burn a hole in our pockets. Even the sponsors are struggling to commit to us because of this reason. We conveyed this to the board and hopefully we won’t have a problem in hosting matches here,” said a team official who attended the meeting.

During the meeting, the board told the franchises that BCCI Anti Corruption Security Unit head Ravi Sawani will brief teams about the do’s and dont’s in the wake of the match-fixing scandal.

LOL the only reason why we can't play is politics but BD has no issue yet only their ONE player gets to play and even for very few matches. This shows how talented your team is and how much IPL wants it :haha::haha: @arp2041 am i right na ? :kiss3:

As I told, BD cricket team is a burden on entire Cricketing world.

Don't know why ICC is tolerating these kids team.

We have Under-9 Gully Cricket team better than BD.
